Mark Gurera, age 56, passed away peacefully at home on November 26, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family after courageously battling cancer for two years. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched countless lives. As the fifth of eleven children, Mark's deep love for family was at the core of who he was. Despite being part of such a large family, he built lifelong friendships and embraced many as brothers.
Mark graduated from O'Hara Catholic High School in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1988 and soon after joined the United States Navy. He proudly served on the USS Ranger on Coronado Island in California, launching and recovering aircraft during his four years of service. He was honored to serve in the Gulf War and was awarded several commendations and medals before his discharge. Mark was deeply patriotic and held immense respect for those who served. He often watched military homecomings, moved by the sacrifices made by service members and their families.
After returning home to Kansas City, Mark earned an Associate's Degree in Electronic Engineering from DeVry University. He later moved to Dallas, Texas, where he began his career as a field service engineer in the semiconductor industry, working for LAM Research and then Applied Materials for a combined 14 years. Dedicated to bettering himself, he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Technical Management while working full time and raising a family.
In 2009, Mark embraced a new opportunity in the healthcare industry, grateful for the chance to return closer to family. He spent 13 years with Cassling Healthcare, servicing large medical imaging equipment throughout Northeast Kansas. Known for his commitment to excellence, he worked long hours and traveled great distances to support his customers. Later, he joined Canon Medical Systems, a move that brought him back to Texas and closer to his adult children, an opportunity he treasured.
Mark met the love of his life, Kristina Kramer, while working at a movie theater in high school. A year after they met, they went on their first date, and Mark knew instantly that she was the one he would spend his life with. They married on July 14, 1990, and built a beautiful life and home together. Their greatest joy came with the birth of their children, Nathan and Katherine, who completed their family and filled Mark's life with pride.
From a young age, Mark had a passion for sports. He played nearly everything, boxing, football, baseball, basketball, golf, and even one year of wrestling. One of his favorite memories was winning the Silver Mittens Championship in Kansas City at age six. Though he excelled in many sports, his fondest memories were the spirited backyard basketball games with his brothers and cousins, filled with competition and Italian-family-style banter. He loved cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, but nothing brought him more joy than watching and coaching Nathan and Katherine. Coaching came naturally to him; he had a gift for breaking down even the simplest skills to help others improve, and he often said he wished he had pursued coaching as a career.
Above all, Mark loved being with his family and the many friends he considered family. From a young age, he was a protector, a role he carried proudly throughout his life. Family gatherings often brought up the legendary story of him crawling out of a station wagon window as a child to defend his family, an early sign of the man he would become. He was steady, loyal, and always there when someone needed him.
Mark cherished Sunday family dinners, usually followed by a competitive game of cards, dominoes, or cornhole. He was known for his fierce drive to win and the occasional heated banter that came with it. He loved laughter and harmless pranks, especially his signature growl at a bathroom door to startle whoever was inside. He also had a talent for perfectly timed movie quotes, immediately followed by his trademark question: "Do you know what movie that's from?" Mark was loving, kind, faithful, genuine, and strong. He touched more lives than he ever realized, and his absence leaves an immeasurable void.
Mark is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Susan Gurera; and his sisters, Anne, Veronica, and Elizabeth Gurera.
He is survived by his wife, Kristina; his children, Nathan (McKenzie) and Katherine; his brothers Joe, Paul (Karen), and William (Kelly); his sisters Nancy (Frank) Perusich, Angela (Val) Weaver, Mary Gurera, and Sarah (Homer) Shay; as well as many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
