Obituary published on Legacy.com by James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory - Owensboro on Dec. 29, 2025.
Mark Evan Hatfield Sr. of Owensboro went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 27th, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family following a hard-fought battle with cancer. Mark was born in
Owensboro, Kentucky on December 26th, 1957, to Francis Marion Hatfield and Mildred Young Hatfield. He was the patriarch of his family and was affectionately known by his children and his grandchildren as Superman. This was his 5th battle Mark fought with cancer, and his family believed he could do anything. They had seen him defeat the odds and show superhuman strength daily.
Mark lived a life marked by loyalty, hard work, and unwavering devotion to his family. His greatest pride and joy was watching his children and grandchildren play sports, and he especially treasured time spent traveling with those he loved most. A devoted sports fan, Mark enjoyed cheering on UK basketball and faithfully following the Dallas Cowboys-teams that brought him both excitement and lifelong enjoyment. Mark was also a proud Kentucky Colonel.
After 48 years of dedicated service, Mark retired from Owensboro Grain in August of 2024. He is remembered by colleagues for his tireless work ethic, integrity, and quiet strength-qualities that defined both his professional and personal life.
On September 11, 1976, Mark married the love of his life, Mary "Pudgy" Dennison. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising four children and celebrating a growing legacy of ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren-truly a legacy of love.
Mark's legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, who carry forward the values he lived by every day: honesty, humility, hard work, and the importance of showing up for the people you love. He taught by example, never seeking recognition, but always offering a steady presence, dependability, and love. His influence will continue to be felt for generations.
Mark is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Pudgy Hatfield; his children Stacey (Patrick) Connelly, Mark Hatfield Jr. (Jennifer), Joey Hatfield (Jillian), and Stephen Hatfield (Shannon); his cherished grandchildren Madison and Katie Beth Connelly; Evan (Makayla) Hatfield, Austin (Rachel) Hatfield, Kylie Hatfield and her fiancé Braden Alsman, Hadley, Connor, Sophie, Griffin Hatfield, and Hailey (Austin) Kellems; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Elayna Ann Hatfield and Jaxson Ray Hatfield.
He is also survived by his brothers Keith (Don) Hatfield and Jeff (Tammy) Hatfield; his brother-in-law Terry Robertson; and two lifelong friends who were like brothers to him, Ronnie (Mary) Edge and Richard (Karen) Strode; his brother-in-law Jimmy (Kathy) Dennison; his sister-in-law Patty (Jeff) Carter; and a dear cousin Tina (Mark) Hires as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Mildred Hatfield; his brothers Barry, Randall, Freddy, and Brett Samuel Hatfield; and his sisters Lisa Robertson, Rita Richards, and Dorothy Young.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 2:00pm – 7:00pm on Monday and from 10:00am until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.
