Mark Frederick Karuba, 76, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 15, 2026, in the company of his niece and nephew, Hannah and Dillon Roseberry, and his daughter, Anna Karuba Kirby. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Nancy (Simon) Karuba and siblings, Kevin and Vivian.

He is survived by his daughter Anna (Christopher); granddaughter Sage; and his sister Marcia. Mark was a proud graduate of East High School in Erie, where he participated in many sports including basketball, football, and track. He continued his sports participation as he went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in Math and Psychology at Hobart and William Smith Colleges before relocating to North Carolina.

He received a Master’s degree in Education and Psychology at UNC Chapel Hill and began an extensive career in North Carolina advocating for people with developmental disabilities and developing programs and community resources focused on work initiatives, day programs, and community services, setting up case management services and securing funding for these programs. Mark spent the majority of his career at the Halifax County Mental Health Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC, and later relocated to Asheville, NC, to expand services at the Blue Ridge Center as their Director of Developmental Disability Services before retiring and returning to Erie. Mark was a lover of nature, animals, and knowledge. His compassionate nature, dry wit, and love for his friends and family will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Presque Isle Partnership , 301 Peninsula Dr., Erie, PA 16505 (Presque Isle Partnership) would be greatly appreciated.
