Mark Russell Kidd

Mark Russell Kidd moved to his mansion in heaven on Friday, December 19, 2025, completing his earthly journey far sooner than he or his loved ones ever imagined. Though he hoped to remain with his family for many more years, God had other plans, and Mark is now completely healthy, joyful, and waiting in peace for those he loved so deeply.

Mark loved life. His curiosity was endless, and he cherished learning new things. An avid reader, he enjoyed in sharing his knowledge with others. He was also a devoted fisherman; nothing made him happier than standing on a beach with a fishing rod in hand, the waves at his feet and a smile on his face.

Kindness was at the core of who Mark was. Helping people brought him real joy, and to those who knew him, his warmth, compassion, and genuine welcome were unforgettable.

Mark’s faith in God was a constant presence, shaping his character and guiding his choices. He rarely talked about it publicly, but he lived it deeply—showing love, grace, and humility in every relationship.

After many years as a self-described confirmed bachelor, Mark met the woman he wanted to introduce to his parents. In one perfect day, he gained the love of his life and the family of his dreams—a wife, a son, a daughter, and even a cat and a dog. For nearly thirty years, he loved to boast about his greatest blessing: his family. He was devoted to them, proud of them, and forever grateful for the joy they brought him. He never missed a day telling Rebecca he loved her, a treasure she will always hold close.

Mark’s scientific background led him to long and meaningful careers at Virginia Tech and later at the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. His work brought him great satisfaction, not only through the work itself but especially through the friendships he formed along the way. The only thing that rivaled his love of people was his lifelong love of animals.

Mark is survived by his wife, Rebecca Ferguson Kidd of Abingdon; his son Corey Duncan and wife Jnel Duncan of Chesapeake; and his daughter Jenna Duncan and husband Jon Nadal of Seattle, Washington.

He is also survived by three grandchildren—Conner, Camdyn, and Caydence Duncan of Chesapeake—who knew him as “Pops,” a role he treasured deeply. His love, pride, and joy in each of them were limitless.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Jean Kidd of Hillsville, Virginia. He is survived by his sister, Karen Kidd of Collinsville, and by a special aunt, Deazy Grady of Lynchburg, along with many beloved cousins.

A celebration of Mark’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at Farris Funeral Home in Abingdon, beginning with visitation at 10:00 am, followed by a service at 11:00 am led by Rev. Barbara Farmer. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 pm at Sunset Cemetery, 501 S. Franklin St., Christiansburg, VA. Pallbearers will include Carlton Blanks, Eric Blanks, Kenny Edwards, Bobby Kitts, Chris Jones, Matt Wright, J Ware, and Tony Edwards. Honorary pallbearers are Gary Nickles and V.L. Manuel.
