Mark Charles Lorge, 71, of Seattle, WA, most recently of North Little Rock, AR, born to Edmund and June Cody Lorge on February 18, 1952, joined his parents, brother Michael, and sister Marie in everlasting life on May 30, 2023.
Mark was the third of six siblings, spending his childhood in the Merrimac Park and Portage Park neighborhoods of Chicago. Mark attended St. Pascal and Our Lady of Victory grammar schools in Chicago, then first attended Holy Cross High School, but graduated from Loyola Academy in Wilmette. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia for four years where he majored in Russian Studies and World Literature.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Mark was an athlete. As a boy, he swam and played water polo for the Portage Park Swim Club with his two older brothers, and he continued with both sports in high school and at the University of Pennsylvania. Mark always felt at home in the water, so lifeguarding on Lake Michigan's Chicago beaches was his favorite summer job.
Mark was a very intelligent and friendly person; he was a gifted writer of poetry, short stories, and screenplays and an avid, lifelong reader. In Seattle, Mark built boats and worked as inventory control manager for an importer, but he was most proud of his work in the film industry. He worked as a grip, dolly grip, and lighting technician for a wide variety of TV shows, movies, films, and commercials. His movie work included: House of Games; The Chocolate War; Come See the Paradise; and The Book of Stars. He was also an Assistant Educational Film Producer at the University of Washington for several years. It was his film industry work – coupled with his Russian studies in college – that led him to move in October 1993 to Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia for six months.
In Seattle where he lived for over 40 years, he developed many friendships, visited and spent holidays with his Farley cousins and their families, and enjoyed walking and riding his bike around Green Lake. He was an avid outdoorsman, spending time hiking and camping in the mountains around Seattle. In 1985 he led his brother Frank and a friend on a spectacular hiking/camping trip into the Enchantment Lakes in the Cascade Mountains. This trail is an alpine wonderland and widely regarded as the crown jewel of hiking in the State. He also enjoyed cooking, particularly fresh food – never frozen! He shared his love of coffee and seafood with family. He often spoke of a big Thanksgiving meal he shared with his film crew friends in Seattle.
He was the loving brother of Frank Lorge (Melissa) of North Little Rock, AR, Eileen Knapp (Jon) of Lake Zurich, IL, and Suzanne Tyrell of Westminster, CO; cherished uncle of Mark (Jill) Lorge, Cody (Megan) Lorge, Katherine Lorge, Stephen (Amy) Lorge, all of Central AR, and Gregory Knapp of Lake Zurich, IL; great-uncle to five great-nephews and two great-nieces; fond nephew of Eileen Patricia Farley of Seattle; beloved cousin and dear friend to many.
A celebration of life will be held privately by the family. Donations in Mark's memory can be made to the QueenAnneHelpline.org in Seattle, WA.
