James Richard Murphy

James R. Murphy - beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach and friend - passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 8, 2026.

Jim was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1944 to James and Anne Murphy, the eldest of four boys: John, Mike, and Patrick. An avid athlete from a young age, Jim began playing golf at age 12 and went on to medal in the state championship while attending Seattle Preparatory School. He earned a golf scholarship to Seattle University, where he received his Bachelor of Education, and later continued his studies at the University of Washington, earning a business degree.

Following his heart, Jim dedicated his career to education as a high school math and accounting teacher at Rainier Beach, Newport, and Sammamish High Schools. Teaching was more than a profession for Jim-it was a calling. He was deeply committed to his students, mentoring them not only in academics but also in their college decisions and long-term career paths.

In addition to teaching, Jim had a lifelong passion for coaching. He began coaching volleyball, moved on to junior varsity basketball, then became head coach of a varsity basketball program, and later served as varsity golf coach at Sammamish High School. His genuine care for students and athletes alike made him a natural choice for Athletic Director at Sammamish High School, a role that brought him great pride and joy.

During the summers, Jim enjoyed working at Longacres Racetrack alongside many fellow teachers, relishing the excitement of the job and the strong camaraderie he shared with coworkers. He spent countless hours each year preparing tax returns for friends and family with great care and generosity, often devoting far more time and attention than he ever charged for his services.

Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cecile Greiner Murphy; his children, Trish Murphy (Jeff Adams), Michael Murphy (Gilma Quintero), and Colleen Terpening; and his cherished grandchildren, Cece Terpening, George Terpening, Itsabella Quintero, and Michael "Mickey" Murphy.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to St. Vincent de Paul for hosting the memorial reception. Those wishing to honor Jim's memory are invited to make remembrances to St. Vincent de Paul.

Funeral services will be held on February 7, 2026, at Saint Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Sun City, Arizona.
