Mark McLean Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home on Feb. 23, 2026.
Mark William McLean, 61, a well known and loved resident of Sunapee, NH passed unexpectedly at his home on February 18, 2026.

Mark was born on December 15, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois the son of George McLean and Margot Burford McLean.

Mark's family had strong ties to Great Island in Sunapee since 1888 and he relished in water skiing, boating and enjoying lake life with his family and friends.

Mark was an avid photographer and passionate about boats. He enjoyed building projects, gardening and snowmobiling. He had a soft spot for his adopted cats, Effie and Oliver. Mark attended Wentworth Institute of Technology and worked for 18 years as Project Manager at Preferred Buildings with Lavalley Group in Claremont, NH.

In 1988 Mark met Katherine at the 100th anniversary of the island house, Grace Haven. He was kind hearted and dedicated to Katherine, and they were kindred spirits throughout their years of travels and stories, and married on July 1, 2017.

Mark had a love for Lake Sunapee and could navigate the lake through rain or fog, or snow and ice. He became captain of the MV Kearsarge and will be sorely missed by his many friends and family. When you listen to his favorite group "The Cure", you will think of Mark dancing and singing along.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Katherine McLean of Sunapee, NH; his son Maxwell McLean (Marta) of Norfolk, CT; Brendan Powers of Sunapee, NH and Kyle Powers of Bedford, TX. His siblings, George McLean, Jr. (Susan) of Wilbraham, MA; David McLean (Jill) of Sloetchburg, NY; Christine McLean of Newport, NH; and Geoff McLean (Allison) of Georges Mills, NH. Mark was uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Mark was predeceased by his parents.

A service for Mark will be held at 5:00 PM on Thursday, February 26, 2026 at Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main St. Newport, NH. The family will continue to welcome visitors after the service until 7:00 PM.
