We didn't know Mark personally but he was frequently down on the wharfs (as we were!) him & his E-bike. Always willing to chat & very friendly. Will miss seeing him around & we thank him for his Military services. Our condolences to his family. RIP our Nantucket constant. J&A Backus

Mark was a good man. I worked on Old south Wharf for 4 summers and got to know him. He loved the Wharf and everyone on it - visitors, regulars, merchants - Mark had a smile and a greeting for you. If he went for coffee, he brought one back for you. He´d show up with donuts in the morning or bought a box of ice cream sandwiches to distribute on a hot afternoon to all of us in our stores. He was thoughtful beyond measure. He loved dogs and had a smile, a greeting and a biscuit for every one that came to the wharf. If I needed a hand - fixing a drawer, reaching the highest shelf, moving furniture - Mark was there. He did a lot of good in his life. He had some struggles and hard times. His passing is very sad and all too soon.

I will truly miss him. I would look forward to seeing Mark when I went to work at Greenhound.
He was a very kind man, who told the worst jokes EVER, he would come to my desk telling me"Tommy jokes" and I would be like not funny Mark and we would both start laughing
One day I let of a terrifying scream after seeing a mouse run past my feet and Mark being the protector that he was ran up to the guest and after I told him what happened, the next day there were no less than 5/6 traps placed in different places. He would check them too for me over the next couple of days.
He loved sweets and it was common practice for me to get cupcakes, cookies and a drink. One day I came in I had eggs and some items waiting on me. Not because I asked but because he cared.
He loved his bike, cigarettes and politics to his core and was a proud veteran.
I will miss him

I didn't know Mark Reid all that long. I knew him mostly at the bus station in downtown Nantucket where he was a regular. We were both vets of about the same era, we sparred on politics, sometimes heated, but it was always set aside and we moved on. His jokes, like mine, were awful. He was endlessly helpful, often either funny or cranky, but he was always, ALWAYS, willing to help anyone.
There's a great deal about Mark I and others could never know. He certainly faced any number of challenges. I always looked for that bike of his every morning when I arrived for work. I and many of my co-workers shared stories and tears when we learned of his passing. Here's a final thank you.

I didn´t know Mark personally, but I would always see him riding his cool bike all around town. My Dad was a carpenter as was my husband-so a special place in my heart and in heaven for Mark and those like him who know how to build and in doing so, make the dreams of others come true. I now know he was a Marine and would offer my thanks for his service which has preserved my freedoms as an American woman. I would offer my prayers to his family and loved ones as it is a huge loss. Mark I hope you are now cruising the streets in heaven on a really cool bike.

Mark and I haven´t been friends as long as his other friends We became friend this year, but that 8 months were very special. We talked about each others likes, health, dislike, life history and everything else. I will miss him very much. He touched so many lives on Nantucket. I am glad that there will be a service on Nantucket this coming Thursday. Marks I hope you are flying high and free now. Till we meet again

I met Mark at the local Nantucket bus station where I worked. During the long, cold island winter, Mark (and that e-bike of his) was a constant presence. We discussed politics, told each other really awful jokes, talked about our time in the military and much more. He was endlessly friendly and helpful to one and all. I miss him a lot and I'm sure he's at peace.
