Mark Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sorensen Funeral Home - St. Petersburg on Apr. 1, 2025.
Dr. Mark Weston Smith, 66, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, service, and dedication to his family, his patients, and his community.
Born in Seymour, Indiana, Dr. Smith's journey was one of lifelong learning and selfless giving. After graduating from Seminole High School, he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Florida State University. His passion for eye care led him to pursue a second Bachelor's Degree in Physiological Optics and a Doctorate in Optometry from Southern College of Optometry, where he also completed an internship in Ocular Disease at VEF Eye Center at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Returning to his hometown, Dr. Smith began his career in private practice before becoming the Center Director for an ocular disease and surgery referral center with Omega Health Systems. Eventually, he settled in St. Petersburg, where he spent over 30 years serving patients at Suncoast Medical Clinic. A devoted and highly respected Optometrist, he was a member of the American Optometric Society, the American Optometric Association, the Florida Optometric Association, and the International Sports Vision Association.
Outside of his profession, Dr. Smith was an avid fisherman and sportsman who found joy in the great outdoors. He was also a man of deep faith, active in his church, and always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Mark is survived by his loving wife, Anita Rodrigues-Smith; his daughter, Jentry Smith; his mother, Doris Smith; his sister, Linda (William) Hess; his brother, Bret (Lisa) Smith; his cherished nieces, Avery, June, and Zelie, and nephews, Zane, Henry, Loren, Francis, and Merit. He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Alivia (Alex) Hart and Shelbie Seay, and his beloved step-grandsons, Callan and Liam Hart. He was preceded in death by his father, RK Smith. He will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and the love he poured into his family, leaving them with a lifetime of cherished memories.
A celebration of his life will be held on April 5th, 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in Dr. Smith's honor, supporting research and those affected by the disease.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of such a wonderful person and physician. I referred most all of my patients to him over the years whenever someone asked for a referral to have their eyes checked. I knew that he would always provide the best care to my patients. After knowing him for over 20 years it is a tremendous loss of a good friend and colleague. May he rest in peace.

I just received news of Mark's passing and am beside myself. He was not a provider with my insurance, so I paid a small fortune to see him several times a year and wouldn't have had it any other way. He was an outstanding doctor and human being. On every visit, including my last, I asked him how he was doing; I knew he had been treated for cancer, but thought he had beaten it. He always said he felt great and was doing fine. I'm so, so sad that that was not the case. Mark had great bedside manner and we would kid with one another and laugh throughout the appointment. I can't tell you how very much I will miss this remarkable man. I am so grateful to have had Mark for my doctor. My deepest sympathy to his family. Please know that we all share in your sadness and your loss.

I just got the BayCare letter notifying of Dr Mark's passing. I was stunned and felt like I had lost a dear friend. He was "just" my eye doctor but the best one I had ever had. His caring personality, great handshake, and passion for his work made getting eye exams something to look forward to.
I don't know how anyone can "replace" him. He was simply the best. My deepest condolences to his family. We are all better for having known him.
I will miss you, Dr Mark.
With gratitude,

We received the letter telling us of Dr. Smith´s passing. Absolutely shocked and saddened by the loss of such a fine man and practitioner. I saw him a couple of months ago . As with all, his friendly easygoing demeanor and positive outlook on most anything diffused the seriousness of his battle and condition as he performed his job with his patient always first and foremost. As he said he would do until he couldn´t. He fought a hard battle.
He saved my sight and an eye many many years ago and I have seen him and thanked him ever since. No need to repeat what so many others here have already said. We were not personal friends but seemed to be on every visit. I have shed a tear at the news and wonder who could possibly replace him. My very deep condolences to his family at such a time of loss. I believe "breathe in, breathe out, move on" would be something he would have believed in. If there is a heaven he´s there. Thanks Doc from me.

At my first appt with Dr. Smith, he insisted I call him Mark. When he recognized my last name, I let him know my mother (Suzanne Pews) was a longtime patient and fan of he and his staff. He was obviously shaken by my mother´s sudden passing, and again, I realized he was as a good a man as he was a doctor.

I moved into a garage apartment in the alley behind Dr. Smith's house in 2011. At the time, he had a fabulous dog named Snickers. I was from Oklahoma & I believe he went to optometry school at OU. He became my optometrist & I always loved all his fishing memorabilia in his exam room...especially the cross-stitched picture because it reminded me of things my mom would make. Obviously, he was an incredibly caring provider and it was a joy to see him at appointments. Lastly, he always greeted me with the best handshake. It is a shock that he is gone & will be missed dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.

Dr. Smith was the most kindest, compassionate people I know. He was my Doctor for many many years. I knew something was wrong when I last saw him Dec 2024. But, as always he was upbeat. I could tell he was not ok. We talked about many things. Even him retiring, he said, no what would I do then. I think he came back to say Good-bye to us, his patients. I will most definitely, honestly miss him. RIP Dr. Mark Smith, job well done! I will never forget you. Condolences to his wife, daughter, family and friends A. Williams

I'm deeply saddened to find out that Dr. Mark passed away. I was one of his very first patients when he started his practice in St. Pete. His office on 62nd Ave and 16th Street. I followed him wherever he chose to go. I've lost a friend, not just my eye doctor and I'm so sorry that his family lost him so early in life and after such a fight. He's left a legacy of kindness to those who were his patients and love beyond life for Jentry; we talked about her since she was born, through school at Canterbury, college and now New York. Our last visit; he was very happy she found such a wonderful young man and had chosen to remain in New York. The love of a father will never fade.

I am so very, very sad to hear about Dr. Smith's passing. I saw him in February and we talked about our future retirement plans. I always felt that I was in the best hands when I saw him, and he was so very easy to talk to--he always put me at ease and we made each other laugh. I'm sure he will be so missed by his family, and my thoughts are with you all during this sad time, and in the future. He was definitely one of a kind!

I just learned of Dr Smith passing away. I am shocked as he always seemed so healthy and full of energy. I saw him twice a year to monitor my eyes and get out in front of possible glaucoma. Even though I usually had an early morning appointment, he was raring to go and always brought a smile to my face. My son also loves fishing, and I would tell him of the latest tournament success and show a picture. I will miss our interactions and send my love to his family. Just know that he positively impacted so many people (as you can see from this wonderful guest book!) and that means a life well lived.

It was an honor to call Mr. Mark Smith not only my doctor, but a true friend. We shared much about our families, our hobbies as well as our likes and dislikes about society, sports teams and having my eyes dilated. He knew I was super sensitive to light and would seem to take pleasure in knowing if nothing else, I would be crying before I left his chair; either from that tiny flashlight or laughing at something he would say. We talked Koi fish and family. He helped me to see clearer both literally and figuratively. If I listen to my mind's eye...I can hear him saying: "Which is better...#1 or 2...this...or this?" Although I literally spent only moments with him during the course of a year, it seemed as if I was his only patient whenever I had an appointment and we spent all the time I needed.
He encouraged me in my job, didn't believe me when I retired, but was not surprised when my retirement lasted only a month. His words helped me to be a better person and leader and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to personally let him know that.
Like I told him when I first met him..."Dr. Smith...huh?! So when did you all get back? " As my lame reference to the Jupiter II and...Lost in Space. I'm sure he must have heard those type of references a lot, but one thing is for certain, he knew The Savior and was not lost, but found; I take solace in knowing he is now living in the Promises of The Lord Jesus Christ. God's continued blessing to the Smith family and the many, many lives he touched and how he allowed us all to see the world a little more clearer.

It both shocked and sadden me upon learning of Dr. Smith's transitioning today. He was not just a special doctor but a special man, too. I would see him during annual eye exams and on occasions when purchasing frames. Always pleasant and having a kind word for his patients and others. I could tell it was part of his character. I enjoyed talking with him even when I had to change physians presumably due to his health challenges. I have fond memories of us bantering back and forth about the Gators and Seminoles ultimately resulting in hearty laughter. Many times, before he sold his home on Beach Drive, we extended greetings during my morning walks. He was a pleasant, friendly, professional, funny, fun, and genuine person. I will certainly miss seeing him at eye appointments. Rest in peace Dr. Smith and prayers for the family, friends, and staff. God bless .

This is a hard one. I appreciate all Dr Smith did for our family as his patients. I´ll never forget when I noticed his Florida State Diploma on his wall and realized we graduated the very same day; I told him that I couldn´t believe I was allowing him to work on my eyes knowing he and I were so young in our professions! He was a great guy and always so pleasant and understanding even when my visits were because I accident sprayed or a chemical got into my eye. He will be missed.
