Marlene Butler, nee Vyneman, age 86, of Darien; Beloved wife of 64 years to the late Michael L. Butler. Loving mother of Michelle (Frank) Mingey, Patricia (Bill) Hansa, Erin (Jimmy) Horath, Kathleen (Stephen) Unes, Jennifer (Kevin) Kearns, and the late Mark Butler. Loving grandmother of Michael (Caitlin), Billy, Michael, Jack, Emma, Claire, Travis, Bella, Madeline, Zachary, Mollie, Grace, Charlie, and Eibhlin. Great grandma to Izzy and Emmett.

Sister of the late Francis (Lowell) Reider and Richard (Janet) Vyneman.

Marlene was born on March 27th, and was the 3rd child of Bill and Emma Vyneman. She grew up on a small farm in Annawan, IL. She attended a one room schoolhouse for her elementary years and later went on to earn a nursing degree at St. Ambrose College, which she always proudly stated was paid for with her mother s egg money. After graduation, she moved to Chicago to work at the VA Hospital. Soon after, she met the charming Michael Butler.

Michael and Marlene were married on August 30, 1958. They were blessed with seven children, Michelle, Dawn, Patti, Mark, Erin, Kathleen, and Jennifer. They settled into a tight-knit neighborhood on the South-Side of Chicago. She helped build a community at St. Denis Parish where she worked vehemently to help save the unborn children through Pro-Life causes.

During this time, she continued to work as a nurse doing private-duty, industrial nursing (Nabisco), workmen s compensation, and the neighborhood fixer of scratches and knicks. She loved being a nurse and took great pride in her profession.

Family and friends were always central to her life. She loved going home to Annawan, spending time with her family and playing a game of Rolle-Bolle. Marlene also loved to entertain at Lake Thunderbird. She loved the idea that people could come out to the lake to socialize, catch-up, and back away from busy lives. One of her favorite events was to celebrate St. Patrick s Day. While her husband and son dyed the Chicago River green, she was on the side-lines partying with the rest of the family making the best Irish Coffee. She also loved to play golf and to travel where she met many people along the way. She truly was a social butterfly.

Marlene was so family focused; she loved being a grandmother, great grandmother and an aunt to so many. She was her grandchildrens number one fan. She attended many sporting events, concerts, and celebrations. As her grandchildren grew, so did her relationship with them. She often partied with them at her lake house. But most importantly, she offered them great advice and always shared her love of God and the importance of faith with them.

Marlene s legacy will be all the lives she touched for the better. She truly helped so many people through her kind actions, great advice, and charitable heart. She will be missed by so many.

You mom was a wonderful lady. She always came to St. Denis friendship luncheon every May. She took care of the baby bottles every year until she could not do it anymoreand passed it on to other ladies in the St. Denis Women's guild.
I am so sorry I never herd of her passing. I asked a copy of
st.
deis friends and Donna Nelson said she thought Marlene had passed last year. I looked up her obituary today and am writing this memory of her. She always loved receiving our Ministry of Praise Letter and my sending her the Notre Dame daily reflection. I sent these on line so I never heard of her passing.

Please except my sincere sympathy she will never be forgotten.

sincerely Florence Strand

I worked at The Birches when Mike was a resident. Marlene was one of my favorites. What an amazing and inspiring woman! I always enjoyed talking with her and Mickey. And of course I loved St. Pat´s when the Butlers would dye the pond and perform Irish dancing! And of course when Mike was Irishman of the year. Sending my condolences to the Butler family!

Dear Butler Family,
We were so sad to hear of Marlene´s passing. She was such a kind, nurturing lady. Her presence at the Friday Night Club gatherings brought much energy and laughter to us! She always referred to us as the "young newlyweds"! She was so proud of all of you and her love for family showed in all she did. May you find comfort in the many memories you hold dear.
