Marlyn John Walterman was born on September 3, 1933, to John and Anna (Johnson) Walterman in Buffalo Center, IA. He was baptized and later confirmed at the E & R Church in Ledyard, IA. Marlyn graduated from Ledyard High School in 1951. Marlyn served in the United States Army from January 20, 1954 to November 4, 1958 when he was honorably discharged. While in the Army he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and Camp Carson, CO.
Marlyn was united in marriage to Beverly Anderson on December 10, 1955, in Elmore, MN. They made their home in Blue Earth, MN for one year before moving to Fairmont in 1956. Marlyn and Bev were blessed with four children, Julienne, Katherine, Pamela and Michael. Marlyn and Bev were able to celebrate 69 years of marriage before Bev passed away on February 18, 2025. Marlyn owned and operated a Feed Grinder for a few years and then worked at the Fairmont Schools for 23 years where he was in the maintenance department and drove school bus, often driving for many sporting events. He also drove for 7-Up (Coca-Cola) in Fairmont for several years.
Marlyn was a longtime member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Fairmont and the Lee C. American Legion Post #36. In his younger years, Marlyn was active in bowling league and softball league and he could often be found dancing with Bev at Interlaken in Fairmont. He was a 4-H leader when his children were growing up and this instilled the love of the Martin County Fair and the Minnesota State Fair in him as he would spend many days at the fair every year. Marlyn enjoyed the outdoors fishing and camping, especially to one of his favorite places, Green Lake in Spicer, MN. As he got older and after retiring, ice fishing was a priority, and he loved spending as much time as he could out on the lake. He was always up for playing cards. Marlyn's greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory include his four children, Julienne (Scott) Schumacher of Janesville, MN, Katherine (David) Moeller of
Fairmont, MN, Pamela Wedel of
Fairmont, MN and Michael Walterman of Blue Earth, MN; six grandchildren, Jared (Sarah) Wedel, Justin Wedel, Ryan (Shawna) Schumacher, Sara (Kadie Petron) Schumacher, Dereck Walterman and Ashley (Seth Wallen) Walterman; six great-grandchildren, Zaelee Walterman, Lyla Wedel, Wyatt Wedel, Coen Wallen, Dax Wallen and Eleanor Rae Schumacher; and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Walterman; wife, Beverly Walterman; and parents-in-law, Clarence and Arlet Anderson.
