Obituary of Marsha Alpert
Marsha Lynn Alpert, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and pillar of the Denver community, passed away on August 4 following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 73.
Born on New Year's Day, 1952, in Saginaw, Michigan, Marsha (née Cohan) was the daughter of Maxine and Richie Cohan. Her father operated a prominent hamburger restaurant chain, and her mother was active in civic life and Jewish community organizations.
Marsha earned her degree in Education from the University of Denver and began her career as an elementary school teacher in Denver Public Schools and Cherry Creek Schools, where she touched the lives of countless students with her warmth, patience, and dedication.
In February 1979, she married home builder and real estate developer Ted Alpert at Temple Emanuel. In 1980 they welcomed their first son together, Jonathan, and in 1982, came their second son, Gregg.
Marsha was passionate about giving back and bettering the community she has always called home. She served as former chair of the Cherry Creek Schools Foundation in the 90s. In 1995, she became the second woman elected to the National Jewish Health board of directors, continuing a family tradition of service to the nonprofit. Her grandmother, Miriam Cohan, went door-to-door to collect donations for B'nai B'rith in 1918 and her mother, Maxine, served on the Women's Board in the 1970s.
In 2001, Marsha joined the Council of National Trustees, which helps organize events and raise funds in support of the nonprofit-hospital's work. In March, she and her family were honored for their efforts.
In her free time, she enjoyed playing canasta and Mahjong with her friends, swimming, making challah french toast on Sundays and most of all, spending time with her family, who she loved dearly. Over the past 45 years, Marsha and Ted have been actively involved in numerous organizations. However, their greatest joy comes from their roles as parents of four incredible boys and grandparents of nine outstanding young adults and siblings. Marsha was affectionately known as Moey by her family and closest friends. She embodied kindness, compassion and love and all who interacted with her felt those values. She had a playful sense of humor, famously delivering one of her favorite expressions – "Oy Vey" – countless times a day. Moey will live on in the hearts of her family forever.
Marsha is survived by her devoted husband, Ted; her sons Jonathan (Amanda) and their daughters Aria and Ever, and Gregg (Sara); her sister Joyce Groussman; her brother Jeff Cohan (Amy); and her stepsons Ryan (Barrie) and Rusty and their children.
