Marshall A. Gutierrez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 16, 2007.
A 41-year-old soldier from Las Vegas has died from non-combat related injuries in Kuwait, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Thursday. Army Lt. Col. Marshall A. Gutierrez died Monday in Camp Virginia, Kuwait, marking the second death of a military member from Las Vegas in a week. Marine Lance Cpl. Shane P. Harris, 23, was killed Sunday during combat operations in Iraq's Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force based in Twentynine Palms, Calif. Gutierrez was assigned to the Area Support Group in Arijan, Kuwait. The Defense Department said Gutierrez's death is under investigation and provided no further details. Gutierrez is a 1983 graduate of West Las Vegas High School and a 1987 graduate of New Mexico Highlands University. He is the son of Mary E. Gutierrez of Las Vegas. Harris' battalion was scheduled to return to the United States this month, said Marine Corps spokesman Sgt. Chris Cox, who declined say how Harris was killed because of security reasons. Friends and family say Harris was a devote Christian with a strong work ethic and sense of patriotic duty. "He was a great man," said Harris' father, Pat. "He told his mamma, 'If I don't stand between, if I don't go over there and stand over there, they are going to be over here, and your grandbabies are not going to have the life I had.'" Pat Harris, his wife, Carol, and their four children _ Logan, Shane, Ryan and Tiffany _ moved to New Mexico from Texas in 1993, said Wayne Sonchar, a family friend who is serving as a spokesman. The family plans to bury Harris at its ranch in San Geronimo, a tiny rural village about 15 miles southwest of Las Vegas, Sonchar said. Sonchar said the Harrises don't know when a memorial service will be held. "They're not certain when the body will be stateside," he said. "They've been told it could take four to six weeks." ___ Information from: The Santa Fe New Mexican, www.sfnewmexican.com, Albuquerque Journal, www.abqjournal.com

Marsh,
There are no words to describe how much you are missed. There is not a moment that goes by without thoughts of you or wonderful memories of the life we had together. I am so thankful to those out there who realize what a sacrifice you paid and respect your memory and your family enough to post kind thoughts. It still feels like yesterday you were here with us. I love you and I miss you so much. God Bless your soul. I love you.

Gonna be the anniversary of your death, thinking of you and knowing in my heart that you are in Gods graces. Your drive to get through the frequencies have certainly gone unoticed. Sending you some prayers. Also, feelings of tender love via the airways. Your spirit lives on. But for some reason God needs you in Heaven. Your mission was accomplished here on earth. Until we see each other again. Love you Marshall

Happy Birthday Marshall. It would be your 46th birthday today. I know you are in a much better place, but I still miss you. I know you would be especially proud of OUR Family. Nick and Steph are wonderful moral individuals and I know that because of the values we instilled in them, they will be successful throughout life. Destiny has grown so much and is so smart. She talks about you all the time as though you have been there every minute. I know that you are resting in peace and we will all be together again one day. I pray God Blesses our family and I thank him for the Blessing you are, were, and always will be in my life. Thank you for chossing me to be your wife, carry your name, and have your children. I Love you and miss you my Husband.

Marsh, time passes so quickly, seems like yesterday you were here with Brenda, Nick, Steph & Destiny. God alone knows why your purpose in life was
accomplished but that does not make of your family and friends miss you any less. Brenda is so strong, she is carrying on, Nick & Steph have become great adults and you would be so Proud of Destiny. She is not only beautiful but she is smart and witty too. We know you are in a far better place, with Jesus but you are still missed here on earth. Until we see you in when our purpose on earth is accomplished, rejoice!

Dad,
I still find myself in situations where I think for a split second I can just pick up the phone and call you; then reality hits. There are so many things I wish I could tell you about, so many things I wish you could be here for. Know that we remember you throughout it all and we celebrate your life. Thank you for providing the life you have for us. Although the military was ultimaley the reason for your passing, it also provided so many experiences we were able to share together as a FAMILY. Your dedication to your job and your family, among many other postive attributes is something hope I can accomplish in my life. Your hard work and patience has inspired me and it pains me that you wont be here too see how hard Nick and I are working. You provided all the right tools for us to to be succesful in life and we owe you all the gratitude (along with Mom). You picked a good Wife, Dad. You two were a good team! I love you immensely! I'll see you again one day but until then I'll just look foward to it and remember you for the awesome person you were... we know the truth! xoxo

Sending you a message "special delivery" filled with love and prayers to heaven during this Memorial Holiday weekend and throughout the years to come as time is of no significance while you are in Heaven, as you sit with the Angels and with our Dear Lord every now and then send me your peaceful prayers and energy filled with pure humble love. "I knew you for just a moment while in High School. We were each others "first love" "first kiss," and "first embrace!" But, your life was momentarily a gift and your death really made an impact on me. I want to tell you that I love you, and I am sorry for letting you go when I did, you should'nt of let me. But that was the gentleman in you. You did get to explore the world, and know this, that I kept you in my heart as you did, now you get to explore the Heavens and with your Charismatic nature you got them going. Until we meet again, from my heart to yours, Your first Love, Marsha

I Agree that LTC Gutierrez was an AWESOME Soldier who cared about the people he worked with and especially the country he worked for. It is Great to see others still think of him and his hard work isn't going unnoticed. I pray the rest of the world will see what a wonderful Husband, Father, Soldier, and Friend we all lost. Thanks for your uplifting words JD. God Bless you!

LTC Gutierrez took care of me when I worked for him in 05-06. He left an everlasting impression with me of how to take care of Soldiers. He stood up and took care of me where others have previously failed. His hardwork and efforts are the centerpiece of conversations for every stranger entering the DOL building and the Dining Facility in Zone 1 in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. We lost a true warrior!!

Marshall and I were in elementary school together, and junior high. We also attended University together and worked both on the year book and some may not remember but he worked for Campus Police. We actually worked together and one night chased some people who were speeding through the campus. I have good memories of Marshall, one could not find a more upstanding man. Que Dios te Bendiga. Marshall, you were on my mind I was just remembering when the four of us would all hang out together going to the out of town baseball games in Ernest's truck
(those were the good old days fun and care free) oh, how time changes everything, today I heard this song and to me it was you and Brenda she was singing about. This young and beautiful girl marrying her first and only love making all these plans for their future, raising a family and growing old together. Today she is without you and missing you more everyday because not all the plans she and you made came true you still had so many more things to do together.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Marshall, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Marshall's Family,

I was saddened to hear the news about Marshall's death. However, I was not surprised to read about his success as an officer and family man. Marshall proved at an early age that he was a leader and he made things happen. His children may not know this but back in his college days at New Mexico Highlands University, Marshall was hired as the editor of the student paper and yearbook--his sophmore year; duties he carried out in admirable fashion, on top of his studies and ROTC, and as such he readily assumed his responsibilities whether personally or professionally and above all with enthusiasm. I might add he dedicated a line in the NMHU yearbook adding that he loved his wife, so he wasn't shy about that. I realized later that I was in Kuwait myself during his tour there and I can imagine what a great joy and surprise it would have been to catch up with him. For it is people like Marshall who possessed that unique blend of personality, confidence and decency that after nearly 23 years one can readily recall his voice, enthusiasm and ready smile. My sincere condolences to his family as Marshall was indeed a great patriot.

It truly saddens me when I read of the loss of one of our own. It especially touches me when it is someone I personally knew. I was one of his boat Warrant Officers.

I served with then CPT G a long time ago. He was a good man, an honorable man, and one who had my respect. My heart is heavy with sadness. I can only imagine the sadness of you Mrs. G and your children. But you will rejoin him, because you too are good people.

As sure as there is life everlasting, Marshall will be found in the book of life. As is written in Revelations:

1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The Broken Chain

We Little knew that morining that god was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of use went with you the day you were called home. You left us peacful memories, your love is still our guide; and though we can not see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, but we all get call home one by one the chain will link again.

Daddy, I cannot express in words how much I miss you!! Tomorrow will be a year and it still gets harder and harder with out you here! You were the best man I've ever had the privelage of knowing and lucky enough to call you my father! I was/am so proud of all you accomplished! You did everything for all of us and you never complained (with the few exceptions when you'd try to make us clean our rooms or just help around the house). You were generous, caring, strong, i don't think there is one word that describes what an awesome man you were! There are so many things left unsaid and it hurts my heart immensly knowing I'll never get to tell you I love you and hear you say "I love you baby(Annie or Rug)." I wish everyday that I can have one more hug... just to smell you!I look at Dest and constantly wonder what you'd think of her! I wanted soo bad for you to be here and watch her grow up! I'm soo happy you did get to meet her but saddened when I think of how she wont have the privelage of knowing you like I got to! I hate that you're gone but know i am goin to work hard and acomplish all i've promised to! and when times get hard I know you'll be there in my heart to keep pushing and encouraging me! You're my heart daddy and I love and miss you more as each day passes!I'm sorry for hurting you but thank you soooo much for being absolutly wonderful! I'll never forget our memories! Rest well daddy I'll see you in my dreams and I know one day you'll be waitng for me with open arms!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

> Marshall, I will always remember Reina and Tim's wedding
reception, we were dancing to a slightly fast song, you
turned me and we lost contact of each other's hands. I
remember "meeting the drummer" as I "swung" unto the stage.
You and B have two beautiful children and a lovely
"Little Marsha". I thank God for the joy you brought
to B, Nicholas and Stephanie, Destiny, too I am sure.
You were always a good host. And thank you for caring about Joshua too. May the Lord bless your wonderful family with the peace and
comfort that can only come from Him! We know they hold warm
memories of you in their hearts, and I am sure, not a day
passes by without them thinking about you.

Not many people knew Marshall like I did. He was my team member, student, little brother and my brother in-law. His story is one that begins in a small community in northern New Mexico and end across the ocean in a time of war. Marshall's priorities included his family and home in Georgia. His plan to eventualy retire from the military and remain in Georgia. He was a proud husband, parent and grandfather. Life for Marshall was never easy and unfortunately ended in the same manner. Marshall you were always the perfect host to my family and me. Never holding back anything and always making sure we had something to do, wether it was taking us to ball games or Six Flags. May God Bless you and keep Brenda, Nick, Stephanie, Amy and Destiny close to him. They will need his strength and peace everyday. As promised I will be there for your family whenever they need help. Good Bye Buddy.

I'll always miss you Uncle Marshall. I'm always gonna remember the times I went to Georgia to visit. My most memorable moment of Uncle Marshall was when I was pregnant with Mantha & I couldn't make it to Nick's Graduation. I was on the phone with him and he asked how the beached whale was feeling. I told him that I wasn't that big & he cracked up. You will always be in our hearts & thoughts.
