Marshall S. Nelson, 71 of Summerhaven Lake, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2025, at his home surrounded by family. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kearney. Interment will follow at Kearney Cemetery.

Marshall was born January 8, 1954, in Minden, Neb., to Vergil "Nic" Nelson and Lois (Jensen) Nelson. He was raised in Minden and was a graduate of Minden High School. Marshall later attended Kearney State College where he earned his degree. He was also employed as Director of Campus Security. In 1982, Marshall was elected as Kearney County Sheriff. He proudly served Kearney County for 18 years as Sheriff. He then became General Manager of the Harold Warp Pioneer Village until his retirement in October of 2021. On May 4, 1985, Marshall was united in marriage to Peggy Gardner in Minden, Neb. This union was blessed with two sons.

Marshall enjoyed spending time at the lake especially when he was with family and friends. He also enjoyed camp fires, boating, splitting wood and flying. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Lions Club, Prairie Fiber Weavers and Spinners Guild, and the National and Nebraska Association of Sheriffs.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Peggy Nelson of Summerhaven Lake; sons, Robert (Jessica) Nelson, and their children, Amelia, Emma, James and Finnegan all of Kearney and Vergil (Hope) Nelson of Hartington, Neb.; sister, Kay (Eugene) Iacono of Minden; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Marshall was preceded in death by his parents.
