Marta Garcia Fernandez, age 87, of Miami, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 24th, surrounded by loved ones. Born on May 22, 1938, in La Habana, Cuba, Marta was the daughter of Antonio Garcia Garea (Abuelo Papin) and Maria Josefa Fandiño de Garcia (Mima). She grew up in Cuba and later settled in Miami. In 1954, she married Antonio Fernandez, the love of her life, with whom she raised three children: Maria, Antonio Jr., and David. Marta loved spending time with her family, including her 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She demonstrated her love for family in many ways. There were many wonderful traditions and happy memories, such as her famous black beans that she made for every holiday. She also fought for her family when she stepped in front of and stopped Fidel Castro's car in the streets of Cuba to confront him about her husband's political imprisonment. Her happiest moments involved the loving family she helped create and nurture. Marta is survived by her beloved children, Maria Vila and David Fernandez, as well as her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Antonio Fernandez, and her son, Antonio Fernandez Jr. A service to celebrate Marta's life will be held on September 29th from 5–10 p.m. at Memorial Plan Westchester Funeral Home. Burial will take place on September 30th at 12:00 p.m. at Miami Memorial Park.
