With a heavy heart and deep appreciation, we remember the life of Martha Jean Briggs-Wong, who was called home by the Lord on March 2, 2025. Born on May 20, 1947, in Scotch Plains, NJ, Martha lived a life defined by faith, love, and service to others.
Martha was known for her unwavering love for God, her devotion as a caregiver, and her joy in life's simple pleasures-whether embarking on a new adventure, indulging in a shopping spree, or embracing her role as a true fashion diva. An artist at heart, she had an exceptional gift for color matching, able to pair any hues from memory. Above all, she cherished her family and friends, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Professionally, Martha dedicated 25 years to Rutgers University, where she served as a Buyer Assistant in the Purchasing Department. She will be remembered not only for her expertise but also for her warmth, mentorship, and remarkable ability to bring people together. A faithful servant of God, Martha began her spiritual journey at St. John's Baptist Church in Scotch Plains, NJ before finding her church home in 1973 at Community Baptist Church in North Plainfield, NJ. There, she was ordained as a Deaconess in 2009 and served with unwavering dedication. Her love of music led her to participate in the Women's Day Choir and Senior Choir, which she directed for many years. She believed God called her to missionary work, leading her to become a compassionate caregiver to one of her dearest friends and to serve in nursing homes-where she read the Bible, fed residents, and lifted their spirits through song. A true encourager, she made it her mission to send birthday cards to members of the Community Baptist family, spreading joy and love with each heartfelt message.
Martha was preceded in death by her mother, Sylvia G. Lipford, and her sister, Mabel E. Curry. She is lovingly remembered and survived by her daughter, Kimberly R. Briggs-Wiggins; her son, Shon D. Briggs; and her son-in-law, Earnest Wiggins Jr. She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Alexa 'Lexie' Briggs, Earnest Cardell 'Man' Wiggins III, Brooke Briggs, and Sylvia 'Bopp' Wiggins, each of whom she loved deeply and cherished unconditionally. Martha's memory lives on through her cherished lifelong friends-Abigail Rouland, KatieMae Zackery, and Katherine Drakeford-along with her loving church family, who will deeply miss her presence.
Though we mourn her passing, we take comfort in knowing that Martha is at peace, rejoicing in the presence of the Lord.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude's Hospital in Martha's honor.
Martha's love, kindness, and radiant spirit will live on in the hearts and memories of all who had the privilege of knowing her. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." – 2 Timothy 4:7
