Martha Cornish Obituary

Martha Ruth (Yost) Cornish, 87, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., died on Good Friday, March 29, 2024, after a short illness.
She was born November 16, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Paul and Evelyn Yost. She earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, and a master's degree in library science from Case Western University in Cleveland. She worked as a children's librarian in several libraries throughout her life, retiring from the Troy Public Library at age 62 in 1999.
She was devoted to her family and to singing in church choirs, including at Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield Township, Mich., where she and her husband, Harry Cornish, have been members for almost 50 years. She enjoyed knitting, latch-hooking and embroidery, making numerous beautiful pieces for family and friends, and made preemie hats and other items for needy people through a ladies' group at the Kirk. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, including the weekly New York Times puzzle, Sudokus, jigsaw puzzles, reading, and spending time with her family, especially during the holidays.
She married Harry Cornish on Aug. 8, 1959, at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland. He survives her. She also is survived by her children, Bill (Margaret) Cornish of Elyria, Ohio, and Catherine Knuth (Nicholas Woodson) of Arnold, Pa.; four grandsons, David (Jenny) Cornish, Matt Cornish, Michael Cornish and Charlie (Ethain) Duwe; her sister, Robin Mayer of Tega Cay, S.C., and several other relatives and close friends. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Robert Yost.
The memorial service is at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at Kirk in the Hills in Bloomfield Township, Mich., followed by tea in Heritage Hall to greet the family and interment to follow at the Kirk.
Memorials can be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are in the care of A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Directors in Royal Oak, Mich.
