Martha Jane (Donath) Costello, born on September 4, 1950, in Syracuse, New York, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, in her hometown after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Martha was a beloved mother, sister, and friend known for her unwavering spirit and dedication to her family and community.
Martha was the cherished mother of two children, Marty J. (Angela) Costello and Holly A. Costello, who were her pride and joy. She is also survived by her brothers, John W. Donath Jr. of Syracuse, James (Diane) Donath of Liverpool, and David (Nancy) Donath of Syracuse, as well as her sisters, Shirley (William) Ruszczyk of Minoa and Sharleen Turner of Tennessee. In addition, she leaves behind several nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.
Martha was predeceased by her loving husband, Joseph F. Costello, whose memory will forever be cherished. She was also preceded in death by her parents, John and Jane (Keller) Donath, and her brothers, Fred and Paul Donath.
A long-time member of the Syracuse Seventh Day Adventist Church, Martha dedicated her time working in the church office as a secretary. She took great pride in being the head of the Dorcas Society and also served as a secretary for Parkview Jr. Academy, positively influencing the lives of many young students.
Martha was a member of the Syracuse Obedience Training Club for 40 years, demonstrating her passion for animals. Her joyful spirit extended beyond her community service; she was a devoted groupie of the Master's Touch Choral, where she shared wonderful moments with her daughter, Holly.
Martha Jane Costello will be deeply missed for her kindness, resilience, and the love she shared with all who knew her. The life she led and the memories she created will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have encountered her warmth and generosity.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 705 N Main St, Syracuse, NY 13212, on August 1, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Breast Cancer Awareness Fund, CNY SPCA and the CNY Food Bank.
