Martha Jean Hempfling, 66, of Ferdinand passed away Sunday September 7, 2025 in Deaconess Memorial Medical Center in Jasper. Martha was born on October 4, 1958 to Oscar and Marie (Oeding) Gessner. She was united in marriage to Jerry L. Hempfling on June 28, 1980 in Tell City. Martha was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church. She enjoyed playing cards, puzzles and was an avid reader. Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Jerry L. Hempfling. Two sons, Adam Hempfling of Santa Claus and Travis (Ashley) Hempfling of Indianapolis. Three grandchildren, Mason, Kaden, and Landon Hempfling. Two brothers, Frank (Marie) Gessner of Ferdinand and Tony (Donna) Gessner of St. Meinrad. Two sisters, Paula (Tom) Vonderheide of Ferdinand and Clara (LeeRay) Temple of St. Meinrad. Sister-in-laws, Joyce Gessner of Celestine and Bonita Gessner of Jasper. Two brother-in-laws, Roch Gehlhausen and Bill Meyer both of Jasper. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Marie Gessner, brothers, Allen and Mark Gessner, and two sisters, Marlene Gehlhausen and Carol Meyer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday September 11th at 10:00 AM EDT in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 on Wednesday September 10th and continuing on Thursday September 11th from 7:00 until 9:30 at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand.
