Martha Stephens Hitson, 95, of Gadsden County, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025. Born on December 6, 1929, to Roy and Gussie Stephens, Martha was a lifelong resident of Gadsden County and a cherished presence in her family and community.
Martha was the beloved wife of the late Bill Ray Hitson. Together, they shared 73 beautiful years of marriage before his passing in August of 2018. She was preceded in death by her son, William Edward Hitson, and by her siblings Lester Stephens, Evelyn Stephens Todd, Joe Stephens, Fred Stephens, and Buddy Stephens.
Martha is survived by her devoted daughter, Robin Hitson Schmidt (Charles A. Schmidt); grandchildren, Mary Nichole Kimmel and Andrea Kimmel Suber; and great-grandchildren, Destyn Marie Ludke, Phayte Neveah Simmons, Torren Jocef Simmons, Harlyn Leigh Suber, and Hitson Morris Suber. She is also survived by her siblings Marvin Stephens, Hubert "Pinky" Stephens, Frank Stephens, Johnny Stephens (Georgia), Sammy Stephens (Dottie), Gladys Wells, and Nancy Samson.
In the early 1980s, Martha owned and operated a dress shop in Havana, Florida with her best friend Paula Moore, while dedicating herself fully to her home and family. A woman of deep faith, she was a longtime member of Concordia Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. Her unwavering devotion to the Lord guided every aspect of her life.
Martha’s heart belonged to her family, her faith, and the peaceful pond her husband built for her on their Ochlockonee River property, where she found great joy in fishing — and just relaxing. She also had an adventurous spirit and loved traveling across the United States with her dear friend Jackie Vickers, proudly visiting all but six of the fifty states.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Sherresa Wright, Meria White, and Imonie Ziegler for the loving and compassionate care they provided over the past year and a half.
A graveside funeral service will be held on September 3, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Concord Cemetery. A reception will follow at 219 Schwall Rd, Havana, FL 32333.
Memorial contributions may be made in Martha’s name to Shriners Hospitals for Children or to Concordia Baptist Church.
Martha's strength, warmth, and unwavering love will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
