Martha Joan (Proffer) Liddell, 72, of Gainesville, passed away January 5, 2026 in Gainesville.
Martha was born May 17, 1953 in Gainesville, TX. She attended Callisburg school and earned her Bachelor’s degree from Texas Women’s University. She touched many lives in the community through her teaching career at Gainesville High School, where she taught Religion, Geography, and World History. Martha married Bill Liddell, Jr. on December 10, 1971. The couple enjoyed traveling, especially their yearly trip to Wyoming for the last 40 years. Martha also traveled extensively with her sister and husband, visiting such places as Europe, Southeast Asia, Egypt, Africa, South America, and Australia. As a devoted member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Gainesville, Mrs. Liddell taught Sunday School and served in many other capacities.
Survivors include: husband Bill Liddell, Jr.; sister Melissa Brown and husband Mark; nephew Clayton Burr, wife Abby, and their children Cayden and Linkoln; niece Rebecca Hamilton and her children William and Laurin; aunt Sondra De Zambrano; cousin Rachel Barchus; and cousin Charles Woolfolk.
Preceded in death by: grandparents Zula and Pac Miller; grandparents Walter and Lois Bugg Proffer; parents Wendell and Berniece Proffer; daughter Bonnie Berniece Liddell; and brother James Lee Proffer.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home, Gainesville. A funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 9, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Gainesville. A private committal service will follow.
