Martha A. Sowle, a loving wife, devoted mother, compassionate grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025, at Autumn Woods Health Campus, New Albany, Indiana, surrounded by her beloved family. Born on July 11, 1934, in Louisville, Kentucky, Martha dedicated her life to the people she cherished most, and her absence leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her.
Martha's journey began with her education at McKee High School, where she laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work and loyalty. For numerous years, she worked as a seamstress at Bush Keller, showcasing her talent and commitment to her craft. However, her proudest accomplishments extended beyond her career; they were embodied in watching her family grow and thrive.
Martha’s family was her greatest treasure. She is survived by her daughters, Patti (Greg Banet) Banet and Brenda (Guy Simmons) Simmons. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Dustan Alan Banet, Daryl (Allison) Banet, Travis Simmons, Tyler Simmons, and great-grandson, Brenden Simmons. She also leaves behind her sister, Peggy Remaklus, and her nephew, Rob "R.W." Slone. Each family member held a special place in her heart, and she loved them deeply.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband and proud Army veteran, Robert Sowle, and her twin infant daughters, Debra Jane and Donna Jean Sowle. Additionally, she is reunited in spirit with her sister, Helen Jean Myers, her mother, Helen Will Wakefield, and her father, Tot Wakefield. The love she shared with them was a tapestry woven throughout her life.
Her personality radiated warmth and kindness. Martha was known for her honesty, hard work, and quick wit, qualities that made her not just a beloved mother and grandmother but also a loyal friend. She cherished her lifelong friendships with Leona Bales and Kay Templeton both from her grade school years and cheer team, along with Bruce Boggs, always making time to reminisce and share laughter.
A devoted member of Scottsville Christian Church, Martha found joy in her faith and community. She loved spending time outdoors, happily cutting grass and working in her yard, always taking pride in her surroundings. Her passion for family activities shone brightly, as she never missed an occasion to gather with those she loved. Fishing with her husband brought her immense joy, while the melodies of Alan Jackson often provided the soundtrack to her life’s cherished moments.
Martha's visitation will be held on November 12, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on November 13, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, located at 3309 Ballard Ln, New Albany, IN 47150. A funeral service will follow on the same day from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, culminating with a burial at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, 2778 Charlestown Rd, New Albany, IN 47150, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
Martha A. Sowle leaves behind a legacy of love and unwavering support that will echo throughout her family for generations to come. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the warmth she brought to those fortunate enough to know her.
