On Friday, May 2, 2025, Martha Gail Clodfelter Swaim, our precious mom and “Maw Maw,” was welcomed into Heaven with a loving embrace from our Heavenly Father. She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family. While we are deeply saddened to no longer have her here with us on earth, we find comfort and rest in the fact that, since she placed her trust in the finishing work of Jesus Christ, we will see her again one day.
Martha was born on March 17, 1939, in Forsyth County to the late Robert and Bertha Mae Clodfelter. She married the love of her life, Donald (Don), on July 5, 1958, and spent 65 wonderful years by his side. Together, they shared three daughters and were long-time, faithful members of Samaritan Baptist Church.
In her spare time, Martha took pride in being the ultimate homemaker, and she was the best at it, too! She was an incredible cook and seamstress who loved to knit or crochet angels and baby blankets. She also made several wedding and bridesmaid dresses by hand for her grandchildren. But one of the most cherished garments that she made were the hand-sewn aprons she made for her kids and grandkids to wear at our yearly Christmas cookie-making tradition.
When she wasn’t busy with her hands, Martha was keeping Holiday Tours in business. She loved to travel and had visited all but two states (and has a collection of refrigerator magnets to prove it!). A big fan of Elvis Presley, her last trip was with her family to Memphis, Tennessee to tour his home at Graceland. Out of all the places she visited, Martha’s favorite place to be was at home where she was always taking care of her family. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and they adored her back. Known as “the baby whisperer,” Martha had a special way of letting every grandchild and great-grandchild know they were safe and loved. She also had a special way of letting them know that once The Price Is Right and her mid-afternoon soap operas came on, it was time to take a nap.
Our Martha was the most selfless, family-oriented, and spirit-filled woman. We will miss her dearly, but we are so thankful for the memories we have of her.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her loving husband, Don Swaim.
Martha is survived by her three daughters, Kim Pope (Mike), Cindy Wiggins, and Debbie Noah (Aaron); seven grandkids; 10 great grandkids; and one sister.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Chris Neighbors officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:45 PM at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow the service at Parklawn Memorial Park.
