Send FlowersMartha E. Swain, 100, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025, in LaFontaine. Born on August 25, 1925, in Marion, Indiana, Martha lived a full century marked by resilience, independence, and a deep care for those around her.
A proud graduate of Marion High School, Martha began her professional life at South Marion Lumber before finding her true calling in retail. She became a familiar and beloved face at C and H Shoe Store, where she worked for over 40 years. Her dedication to her work and the community left a lasting impression on generations of customers who came to know her not just as a salesperson but as a trusted friend.
After retiring from her long career in shoe sales, Martha continued to give back to her community as a volunteer Pink Lady at Marion General Hospital. She found great joy in this role and cherished the opportunity to support patients and staff with warmth and compassion.
Martha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Swain, who passed away on September 28, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her mother, LaVerna (Harris) Shaw; her father and stepmother, Charles R. and Hazel Shaw; and her sisters, Elta Mae Stinger and Betty Taylor.
She is lovingly remembered by three nephews, three nieces, and multiple great-nieces and nephews. Her family held a special place in her heart, and she remained deeply connected to them throughout her life.
Martha's spirit was defined by fierce independence and an adventurous heart. She and Donald shared many joyful travels to Michigan during their marriage. Even into her 80s and 90s, Martha embraced life with boldness – creating a bucket list that included riding in an Indy race car and taking a spin on a motorcycle – both of which she proudly accomplished.
Known for being assertive yet caring, stubborn yet generous, Martha was a pillar of strength for family members, neighbors, and friends alike. Her fearless approach to life inspired those around her to live with purpose and courage.
