Obituary published on Legacy.com by Colonial Funeral Home of Irving on Jan. 9, 2025.
Martha Jane Throop passed away on September 8, 2011, at the Los Colinas Medical Center, Irving, Texas. She was born on September 2, 1919 in San Antonio, Texas to Fred and Martha Coopwood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Douglas R. Throop, and her son, Douglas R. Throop, Jr.
Janie was an accomplished organist and pianist, and was choir director and organist for most of the chapels at the Air Force bases where her husband was stationed. She also studied piano and organ at the Hochschule for Musik in Frankfurt, Germany. Later, she returned to college and graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music. She taught children music and piano for over 70 years. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, of the National, State and Irving Music Teachers Association, of the Military Officers Womans Club, the Irving Symphony League, and a sixty-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheri Throop and her husband, Vernon Neel; her brothers, Bethel Coopwood and Fred Coopwood; and Robert Throop, his wife, Leah, and their daughter, Stephanie. We will all miss her music.
Burial will be 2:30 p.m., Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. The family asks that memorials be made to the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, 2222 Wellborn Street, Dallas, Texas 75219, or the charity of your choice.
