Martha Wessel Obituary

Waverly Martha Jean Wessel, 83, of Waverly, Ohio passed 3:24 p.m., Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at home.

Jean was born September 27, 1941, in Portsmouth, Ohio, the daughter of the late George E. Slaughter and Helen A. (Cannady) Slaughter.

She is survived by a son, Jerry Lee (Lori) Wessel Jr.; daughter, Jenni (Jerry) Williams; five grandchildren, Tyler (Carolyn) Wessel, Courtney (Jake) Dadosky, Matthew (Ashley) Cuckler, Missy (Jeff) Wisecup, and Jared Williams; twelve great grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; two brothers, retired Rev. James (Mary) Slaughter and Marty (Patty) Slaughter; and multiple nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Loretta Browning and nephew, Steve Slaughter.

Jean was a retired Goodyear and USEC employee as a Record's Analyst and was so proud she could type 109 words a minute. She was a member of Yankee Hill Community Church and used to help during elections at the Pike County Board of Elections voting polls. She loved to read; she could read an entire book in one day!

Jean loved the Lord, her family, as well as her friends. She loved to shop, she was always so proud to find bargains because she would never pay full price for anything, we used to call her Bargain Betty.

Jean's biggest treasures were her son and daughter. She was so proud of them and would tell anyone she talked to about them. She loved to watch her son in church lead the service and testify to the Lord. She was an avid follower of her daughter's sports, she traveled to every game, in every sport, across the country in high school as well as when she played basketball in college. She never missed a game!

Jean would give anything and everything away to someone in need or simply out of the goodness of her heart, if someone said they liked something she was wearing or something in her house she would give it to them and go out and buy another one to replace it.

Jean had many friends because she never met a stranger, but her best friend was Patty Elliott. She loved her so much!

Funeral services will be held 12:00 p.m., Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Boyer Funeral Home, Waverly, Ohio with Pastors Jack Moore and Tracy Rexroad officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Union Cemetery, Denver Road, Waverly, Ohio.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, September 19, 2025, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Yankee Hill Community Church, c/o Jerry Wessel Jr., 612 Giers Road, Waverly, Ohio, 45690.

Special thanks to Department of Labor / Nuclear Care Partners, the last 16 months of her life was spent at home with her team of caretakers. Our mom may have only given birth to one daughter, but she was blessed by her multiple caregivers who became her "adopted" daughters who poured out their hearts, as well as their blood, sweat, and tears to give her the best quality of life by providing around the clock care for our mom. She loved her girls; they were angels who walked this earth as nurses and aides, her team of caretakers were Tabby, Sara, Debra, Alice, Rebecca W, Rebecca D, Tracey, Deb M, Deb S, Erica, Nancy, Amy, and Ashli. Many thanks to her other caretakers who would fill in from time to time during these 16 months.
