Obituary
Marti McCoy was born Martha Sue Crumb, in Dowagiac, Michigan, March 4, 1936, to Elva Ruth (Holem) and Neil L. Crumb. Within several years the young family moved to Indiana where Mr. Crumb was managing editor of several small-town newspapers, including Thorntown. Marti lived nearly her whole life in Indiana, save two years spent at Fort Rucker, Alabama with her husband, and then eight years spent in the Cincinnati area, when the couple was near retirement.
She is a graduate of Mishawaka High School, DePauw University, and holds a Masters from Herron School of Art (then part of IU). Much of her post masters work was done at the University of Tennessee in Gatlinburg. In 1957 Marti married John C. McCoy of LaGrange, Indiana. Marti is survived by her husband, John C. McCoy, and three children, Michael (the late Teresa) McCoy, Jody (Terri) McCoy, and Melissa (Thurman) Montgomery, all of central Indiana. They served as "parents" for three International Exchange Students through Youth for Understanding in the late 70's and early 80's, Kari Kivikoski and Kitta Kanos of Finland, and Johanna McPhail of Australia. The McCoys have six grandchildren, Jon McCoy, Spencer (Mercedes) McCoy, Sadie (Trevor) Morgan, Sammi (Andrew) Collier, Marcus (Ali Lemen) Montgomery and Mercedes (Anthony) Bradley as well as seven great-grandchildren. Marti's parents, a daughter-in-law (Teresa McCoy) and a grandson (Mitchell Montgomery), preceded her in death.
Marti started her career as a magazine illustrator for Aviation Digest. She then began teaching art and spent more than 30 years in the Danville Community Schools. In retirement she was a potter for Turtlecreek Potters in Morrow, Ohio, and then a Docent for the Indianapolis Museum of Art for nearly ten years. Marti was a founding member of the co-op Gallery on the Square in Danville, and taught watercolor at that gallery. Most recently, Marti opened a studio at Woodland Terrace in Danville where she and John resided for the last year.
She was a 69-year member of Kappa Kappa Kappa (Tri Kappa), a Privileged member of Danville Browning Club, a member of Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Hendricks County, and a regular in the watercolor classes of Shirley Carr at the Indianapolis Art Center in Broadripple.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 3:00-7:00 pm on Friday, October 20, 2023 in The Center at Northview Christian Church in the auditorium lobby. Marti and John were both founders of McCloud Nature Park. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to McCloud through Hendricks County Parks & Recreation.
Baker Funeral Home, Danville, is handling the arrangements.

I have fawn memories of Marty in Elementry school and for quit a few years after High school as my mom(Judy Hill) were close friends with Marty. I can remember going into Martys studio on the Square many times to talk about art and visit. I gain a passion for the many forms of Art and the history. I can still remember sitting in class as young elementry student looking at the picture of Artist and Mrs McCoy telling us who it was and the impact these artist had. Always had time and love for Art thanks to Marty and my mom.
