Martin Theodore Grothe Jr., 90, of
York, PA, went to be with his Heavenly Father on August 16, 2025.
Born August 3, 1935, in York, he was the son of the late Martin T. Grothe Sr. and Marie A. Grothe (Quandt). Ted graduated from William Penn High School in 1953, where he played basketball and golf, and went on to attend Juniata College, where he also played golf and earned his bachelor's degree in business.
Ted was previously married to Sylvia Laucks, and together they were blessed with four children. Their daughter, Jamie Lehr (2025), preceded him in death. Surviving are their three sons: Ted Grothe III (Lisa) of Seven Valleys; David Grothe (Jodi) of York; and Jonathan Grothe (Jodi) of York. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Cheryl Wiederanders (Michael) of Tampa, FL.
In addition to his children, Ted is survived by his brother, Paul F. Grothe of York; his sister, Dorthea A. "Dottie" Jacobsen of Blair, Nebraska; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gail J. Grothe (2019) whom he married on April 20, 2002, and his sister, Marie Louise House (2019) of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Following in his father's footsteps, Ted worked alongside his father and brother in the family business, beginning with Grothe Supply Company on Loucks Mill Road. The business later relocated to Memory Lane in East York and was renamed Memory Lane Auto Parts, with the addition of Memory Lane Apartments. Ted also worked in advertising specialties prior to relocating to Pinehurst, NC, where he enjoyed many years as a member of the Pinehurst Country Club.
A man of deep faith, Ted was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in York, where he faithfully served in various roles throughout his life, including singing in the choir and supporting the church and the school. He was also a former member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Clearwater, Florida. His love for fellowship extended into his memberships with the Susquehanna Yacht Club, Victory Athletic Club (life member), Cool Creek Golf Club, Bon Air Country Club, and Pinehurst Country Club in North Carolina.
Ted will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and church community, yet they rejoice in knowing he is at peace with his Savior.
