1941-2024
Martin Joseph Motherway, age 83, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2024 at Essentia Health Care-St. Mary's in Duluth, MN.
Martin was born in 1941 to Martin and Louise Motherway in Hibbing, MN. He went to school in Hibbing until 9th grade and transferred to Chisholm, where he graduated in 1959. He was united in marriage to Susan Mullikin on July 9, 1969. Marty enlisted into the United States Navy and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis from 1960-1964. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Minnesota where he attended Hibbing Community College for two years. He continued his education at Bemidji State University where he earned his master's degree in education. Marty started teaching industrial arts in Lewiston, MN and after 4 years moved to Deer River where he worked for 25 years until his retirement in 2000.
Marty enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and was active in the gun club. He loved to travel, auto racing, sports, and spending time with his grandkids.
Marty is preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Edward Kranik, and wife, Susan. He is survived by his son Mark (Christina) Motherway; and grandchildren, Gina (Jude Hoey) Motherway, and Cael Motherway.
A visitation will be on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, MN followed by the Mass of Christian Burial and military honors. Father Blake Rozier will be officiating. Burial will be at the Chisholm Cemetery on Friday, January 17, 2025 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Jude's Children Hospital.
