Dr. Martin Alan Reuss, age 80, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
Born in Denver, CO on February 25, 1945, he was a son of the late Stanley and Ruth (Kashowitz) Reuss. Dr. Reuss was a graduate of Haverford High School. In 1966, he earned his BA in history from Penn State University, and continued his education at Duke University where he received his PhD in history in 1971. Dr. Reuss' devotion to learning led him to participating in the Fulbright Scholarship program.
Dr. Reuss had an accomplished career, spending over 27 years as the chief historian for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He also dedicated many years as a professor at Georgia Southern University and Virginia Tech. Along with his most popular book, Designing the Bayous, Dr. Reuss authored more than 12 books on waterway resources, flood control and navigation. He was deemed the most knowledgeable person on the Atchafalaya Floodway.
Combining his passions, Dr. Reuss was a member of the American Society for Environmental History, as well as the American Canal Society. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with his peers at the Cosmos Club, where he was a member from 2004 until 2024. Dr. Reuss was also a member of the Fulbright Association and Common Cause.
Dr. Reuss' fondness of nature carried into his hobbies. He took delight in activities as an Eagle Scout, including scouting and spending time outdoors. Always looking forward to his next trip, Dr. Reuss loved traveling and cruises with his wife, Jane. He especially enjoyed Germany and learning about its history. Dr. Reuss also spoke fluent German. He took great pride in serving as a guest lecturer for numerous universities regarding hydrology and water resource management.
Dr. Reuss is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Jane (Posey) Reuss; brother, Calvin Reuss (Penny); nephew, Phil Reuss (Elyse Jimenez); niece, Laura Boudart (Patrick); and great-nephews, Jack Reuss, Nate Boudart (Ashley), and Noah Boudart (Lindsey).
All services will be held privately.
