Marvel Faye (Barr) Rosdail was born on March 28, 1929, in Early, Iowa, to Russel and Elsie (Wilson) Barr, the sixth of their seven children. She was baptized in 1940 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Odebolt and confirmed at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sac County in 1943. Marvel graduated from Early Consolidated High School in 1947 where she was a member of the Girls' Glee Club and the National Honor Society. She also played softball and basketball. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught in a one-room schoolhouse at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, Minnesota. Marvel met her husband Milton through her brother Everett, who was marrying Milton's sister Jean. Milton and Marvel were married later that same year on December 29, 1950, and were married until Milton's death in 2007. The couple ran Rosdail Garage and Wrecker Service, a wrecker/car repair business, in Storm Lake for many years. Once her children were grown, Marvel started in-home daycare. After Milton's death, Marvel eventually moved to Ames, Iowa. This past spring, Marvel returned closer to home and was living in Storm Lake again at the time of her death.
There were several events that shaped Marvel's life. Marvel often made reference to her childhood during the depression. She lost her mother at the age of three, was moved out of her father's house by the age of eight, and was raised in the foster home of Frank and Hattie Zadow until graduation.
Marvel enjoyed music. She sang soprano, taught herself to play the piano and the violin, sang in the church choir, musical theater, and Sweet Adelines. Once her grandchildren were old enough, she would pay each a dollar to sing a song for her. Her grandchildren also came to expect her to make them pancakes, serve chocolate long johns, and expected chocolate shakes on Christmas morning. Marvel could sew. She made her wedding gown, her children's clothing, doll clothes, quilts, and helped restore Santa's Castle figurines and their clothing. She would reupholster or refinish furniture, dig into her ancestry, and learned to repair dolls and her player piano. She was a Camp Fire Girls leader, a Cub Scout leader, and, it seems, she and her friends started girls' sports in Storm Lake. She loved the color pink, pretty things, Shirley Temple, and her collectible dolls. When her children were small, she always wore safety pins on her pants and kleenex up her sleeve in case someone needed one.
Marvel was the last of her generation of siblings, in-laws, and friends, surviving her husband Milton Leroy Rosdail, infant sons Michael and Marvin, daughter Marilyn Carol, granddaughter Tara Michael, her siblings, foster siblings, and brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces Annette, Danielle, Joyce, Katha, and Leann, nephews Jay and Larry, and great-grandson Joseph Thanyiel.
Marvel lived to see her family grow into 4 generations. She is survived by 7 children, Malinda Kay Johnson, Mark Lonnie Rosdail (Lorie Thompson), Marjean Elizabeth (Jeff) O'Bannon, Max Daniel (Patricia) Rosdail, Melody Kathleen Zadow, Mona Sue Rosdail, Matthew Kirk (Diana) Rosdail; 14 grandchildren, Lacey (John) Kuckelman, Whitney O'Bannon, Kelsey (Taylor) Hahn, Shelby O'Bannon, Hunter (Abbie) O'Bannon, Isaac Rosdail, Alexandra Rosdail, Megan Zadow, Alicia (Aaron) Rasmussen, Ryan (April) Zadow, Ashley (Kent) Recker, Austin (Kelly) Zadow, Melissa (Connor) McGuire, and Chloe (Garrett) Felling; and 24 great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Mauricio, Hadley, Asher, Tatum, Nora, Charlotte, Liv, Afton, Sophia, Hazel, Bowen, Rosalie, Logan, Finnegan, Milo, Palmer, Anabelle, Kaley, Cooper, Lane, Beckett, Tucker, and Julian. Marvel also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.
