Grand Coteau– A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Marvel A. Smith at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, in the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Grand Coteau. Fr. Aaron Melancon will officiate the Mass. Rite of Committal will follow in the St. Charles Cemetery.
Marvel A. Smith, a beloved mother, sister and friend whose warmth and compassion touched all who crossed her path, departed this world on January 15, 2026 at the Calcutta House surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 23, 1961, in Sunset, Louisiana, Marvel's spirit blossomed, making connections with a delightful ease that bespoke her undeniable charisma and genuine nature.
For over a decade, Marvel dedicated herself to the intricate world of tax preparation, where her keen mind and meticulous attention to detail earned her the respect and gratitude of many. Yet, it was not just her professional skill that endeared her to those around her; it was her heart – open and welcoming – that truly made her a friend to everyone.
Marvel's personal life bore a richness that mirrored her professional kindness. She found immense joy in the company of her 3 children and granddaughters, whose laughter filled her home and whose lives she followed with great enthusiasm and pride. Marvel’s loyalty and affection extended to her cherished dog, Simmie, who was a steadfast companion and a source of endless joy in her daily life.
An adventurous spirit dwelled within Marvel, invigorating her with a zest for life. She delighted in the excitement of the casino, where the thrill of the game “Peter” was rivaled only by her love for cooking, as she filled her home with the aromas of her culinary creations, bringing friends and family to gather around the table. She also appreciated quieter moments spent watching classic cowboy shows, with "Gunsmoke" being a cherished favorite.
Marvel is survived by her 3 children, Joelle Smith (Miyah), Johnelle Smith (Bhekani) and Joseph Smith (Krystle); her special friend, Tina Theode; her brother, Ricky Lewis, Sr.; her sisters, Sherelle Smith, Kimberly Smith-Forestier; 3 grandchildren, Kamryn Smith, Kymani Smith and Adan Hyde; her aunt, Catherine Polidore; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Marvel is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Charles Smith and Bessie L. Smith; her brother, James O’neal Chaisson, Sr.; her sister, Margaret M. Smith; and her paternal and maternal grandparents.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at Sibille Funeral Home in Grand Coteau. The rosary will be recited at 9:15 a.m. by Deacon Darrell Burleigh.
Pallbearers will be Johnelle Smith, Joseph Smith, Marcus Carter, Dione Mayfield, Tyler Zenon, David Zenon, Jr., Lovie Lucky and Harry Mayfield. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Lewis, Sr., Jamal Chaisson, James Chaisson, Jr., and John Sam.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to her sitter, Joy Noel, and the staff of the Calcutta House and Ochsner Lafyette General, for all their care and compassion.
Marvel A. Smith will be profoundly missed but will forever remain a glowing presence in the memories of those she leaves behind. Her spirit lives on, gentle yet unyielding, reminding us all of the joy found in connection, love, and the fleeting moments that define our lives.
