Mr. Marvin Gibson aka "Birdnest Man" or "043" of Covington, GA passed on October 4, 2025.
Early Life
Marvin Gibson, the son of Albert Gibson, the son of Bossie(Bosie) Gibson, the son of Julius Gibson, the son of Pharo Gibson who all share paternal ancestry with the Lissongo People of the modern Central African Republic, was born on December 31st, 1942 in Andrews, SC. He grew up as the baby of the family, the last to take flight from the nest and soar to the heights that awaited him. He grew up with fond memories of agriculture, cooking, shooting, and instruction in the ways of the Lord. This nurturing ground is what gave Marvin his great work ethic and technical know-how. He attended Rosemary High School where he proudly drove the school bus until graduation in 1963.
Education and Career
As a result of segregation in the Jim Crow South and the untimely death of his father, Marvin followed the path of the great migration seeking a better life, just as his older siblings had. Wanting to chart his own course, Marvin decided not to relocate to Rochester where most of his siblings were, but to Brooklyn, NY. While there, Marvin was under the watchful eye of his church-going, God-fearing, no-nonsense big sister, Margaret Burgess. With a family to provide for, Marvin got straight to work building his skillset with different jobs until he landed a manufacturing position with the General Motors Manufacturing Plant in Tarrytown where he would spend more than two decades until its closure in 1996.
Marvin was a proud United Auto Worker's (UAW) Union member and supporter. He excelled in the Inspection Department as a result of his keen eye for detail, sharp critical thinking, and tactical problem solving skills. After the shut down of the Tarrytown plant, Marvin relocated to Doraville, GA where he joined the team there. He concluded over 35 years of service with General Motors by retiring around the time of the Doraville Plant shutdown in 2008.
Personal Life and Interests
Outside of work, Marvin loved cooking for his family-especially his beloved wife, Dorothy, fishing, shooting, gardening, electronics, working on cars, and building relationships. The running joke between his family and friends was that "Marvin knows everything!" Even though he never made this claim, he had no problem confidently providing unsolicited instruction that he expected to be followed. He was known for his abundance of wit and humor. Even while sick in the hospital, he made family and staff alike laugh with joy. Marvin loved his family deeply and was always willing to support. His generosity flowed through every aspect of his life - through the time he gave, the kindness he shared, and the resources he devoted to uplifting others and the causes he cherished.
In the CB radio world, Marvin's name was "Bird Nest Man" a.k.a "043". Even to this day people call him by his CB handle. He had an extensive interest in the CB Radio world-so much so that the electronic equipment in his vehicles and house would interfere with the tv signals of surrounding residents. If you were with him when the CB radio in the car had problems, he would pull over, jump to the back of the car, ask you to pick up the mic and give you the command "key down on it", and when he was satisfied with the signal, he would say "get up off it." It wouldn't matter who you were, you would be volunteered to assist.
