Obituary published on Legacy.com by Williamson - White Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Amery on Feb. 6, 2026.
Marvin was born at home on April 12, 1941 to Clarence & Luella Gorres, the youngest of six siblings. The family moved two miles to the farm that he lived in for the rest of his life. He attended grade school just down the road at Beaver Brook and then later graduated from Amery High School in 1959. While in high school he participated in wrestling, which was a relatively new sport. His senior year the whole team qualified for the state tournament. He made the podium for his weight class at #138. Marv went on to study at River Falls State College for Agriculture and continued to wrestle at #130.
During college he and his buddies raced stock at tracks in Amery and Cedar Lake. He left college after 1 ½ years and then was drafted into the U.S. Army. It was 1963 and he was glad to hear he'd be stationed in Italy. He spent two years there moving and fixing generators around Europe. When his kids and grandkids asked him what he did in the Army, he would say he was a "paid killer". After being discharged, he returned home and started working for Frank Harmon in Clear Lake operating heavy equipment. He told his family many times that he helped build the Hammond Golf Course.
Through a mutual friend he met Joanne Kuhl in July of 1966. They were married on August 26, 1967. Four girls were born, Julie, Jackie, Jennie and Jeri.
After his father died in 1970, he started milking cows on the family farm. He and Joanne milked cows for 18 years. When they sold the milk cows in 1988, they raised beef. Marv continued to keep busy by driving fertilizer and propane trucks for various Co-ops for 25 years.
Marv and Joanne's free time was spent going to hockey, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer games and wrestling matches. They were at every concert, graduation or event that the four girls and nine grandchildren participated in. They liked to travel to various places around the country usually visiting family or friends. Each place they went to, they had to visit the Texas Roadhouse. Marv had to purchase their stock.
Marv never turned down an opportunity to give a tour of the farm on the Ranger, hitch the 4440 up for a hayride, tell a quiet joke, or share an ice cream cone. He also never met a tree he liked. Cutting down trees and clearing brush became his current obsession. He took pride in his garden and maintaining the large yard. He was a true steward of the land he grew up on.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Luella; brother, Lyle; sisters, Gail Clark and Margie Davidson-Forester; brothers-in-law, Wayne Clark, Bud Lee, Elmer Forester, James Swanson and Dave Humpal; sister-in-law, Kitty Gorres; son-in-law, Matt Butzer; and also, mother and father-in-law, Wilfred and Ermagene Kuhl.
Left to mourn are Joanne, his wife of 58 years; daughters, Julie Gorres, Jackie Johnson (Jason Humpal), Jennie Skulstad (Hans), and Jeri Cook (Kelly); grandchildren, Corey Measner (Tess Barringer), Cassidy Janis (Garrett), Blake Johnson (Tia Anderson), Chase Measner (Becca), Grant Cook, Delaney Johnson (Andrew Schlosser), Hobey Skulstad, Lydia Humpal, and Gage Cook; 11 great-grandchildren; along with sisters Fay Lee and Pat Swanson, in-laws Larry and Patty Kuhl, John and Peg Kuhl, and Pam Humpal (Mike Elmer).
