Marv and his brother Lyle were raised on a small farm in Spooner, Wisconsin by his parents John and Eleanor
Hassebroek. At 18, he joined the Air Force, was trained in Biloxi, Mississippi on radar electronics, and assigned to
work at Hutchinson, Kansas and then Murphy Dome, Alaska. lt had always been his dream to come to Alas ka. He
was stationed at Murphy Dome for 2 years, spent the next 6 years at Murphy Dome with the Federal Aviation
Administration, and then settled in Fairbanks. He and wife Marion together raised four children in Fairbanks, and
the family built a beautiful log home on the Old Nenana Highway. Hunting and trapping had always been a way of
life for him. Marv worked for the Federal Aviation Administration for 20 years and then decided to start his own
construction company. In 1981 he and Becky started Marbec Construction, lnc., expanding to commercial and
public construction with the motto "We Build Anything!" There was nothing that Marv couldn't do when he set his
mind to it. He loved to fish in the Interior rivers but expanded to saltwater fishing when they purchased the Marbec
1 in Valdez and later a larger Marbec 11. The family had wonderful adventures in those boats. He was a very caring
landlord -with 64 rental units at his highest point. In the early 1990's, he and Becky built a retirement home in
Northern Florida with his brother Lyle and sister-in-law June Ann. The family had many great times together there.
Marv worked hard and played hard. He loved his family. He loved children, animals and all kinds of waterfowl. He
started a small non-profit 'Feed the Ducks' to make sure the overwintering Chena ducks had nutritious food to eat
during the long winter. He loved to build cabins in the woods and to boat the rivers in the Interior. He loved his
toys! He was instrumental in saving Olnes Pond when the State was going to shut it down. He fought hard to
prevent the overfishing of the large Pike in Minto. He was an Able Toastmaster and a Master Gardener. He was
proud of his annual vegeta ble garden. He was generous -donating to many charities, local and worldwide.
Marv had a powerful presence, he was loved, he was stubborn, he was passionate, he had high standards, he lived
by 'his way or the highway', he ca red, and he will be missed. Many thanks to his caregiver Candace Tucker (Robert)
and her children Mady and Olivia who became an important part of his family.
