Marvin Stay Obituary

Marvin Stay

July 16, 1935 - August 7, 2025

Marvin Leo Stay, born on July 16, 1935, in Gilman Valley, has left us peacefully on August 7, 2025, at the American Lutheran Home in Mondovi. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, Marvin graced this world for 90 years, leaving a legacy of love and commitment to family and community.

After completing his education at Gilmanton High School, Class of 1953, Marvin demonstrated his devotion to his country by serving in the Army. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to his roots, taking over the family farm in Gilman Valley, where he passionately cultivated the land and livestock until selling the cows in 1999. Farming was more than a job to Marvin; it was a heartfelt passion that shaped his life and was intertwined with countless cherished memories.

Marvin was a man of strong faith and civic duty. He served the Town of Gilmanton as Town Chairman for three decades, in addition to holding various roles that contributed to the well-being of his community. His contributions included serving on the Equity Board, now recognized as Alcivia, and being an active member of the Gilmanton Community Club. His dedication to service extended beyond governance; he was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he volunteered in many capacities, embodying his values through community involvement.

Family was always a priority for Marvin; even amidst his many responsibilities, he made it a point to spend quality time with his loved ones. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Lois, and their daughters: Teresa (Charles) Odegard, Cynthia Manthei, and Cheryl (Eric) Johnson. He took immense pride in his grandchildren, including Tracy (John) Smith, Travis (Crystal) Odegard, David (Emily) Manthei, Sarah (William) Steahr, Tanner Johnson, and Alex Johnson. His legacy will also live on through his great-grandchildren, Colton, Jocelyn, Raelyn, Willa, Keegan, Parker, Miles, and Ryan.

Marvin leaves behind three cherished sisters, Elaine (William) Webb and twin sisters Judy Rood and June (Jerry) Bourgeois. Numerous nieces, nephews, and friends will also forever remember his kindness and contributions to their lives.

Though Marvin is preceded in death by his infant daughter Rochelle, and siblings Ordy (Arlene) Stay, and Beverly (Bernard) Mork, and brother-in-law Marshall Rood, he leaves behind a profound impact on all who knew him. He was not only a staple in the communities he served but also a source of inspiration and joy for his family and friends, often seen enjoying karaoke at various venues including in the nursing home where he received care in his later years.

Marvin's life was a testament to dedication and love, not only for his family but also for his community, making the world a better place for all. He will be deeply missed, yet fondly remembered by many.

A visitation will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Mondovi on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at the same location at 11:00 AM. Marvin's family invites all who knew him to come and celebrate his life and legacy.
