Mary Theresa Britch

HIGHGATE- Mary T. Britch age 93, passed away on January 3rd, 2026, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Mary Theresa Cantell was born on December 25, 1932, the youngest of six children, to Eva (Guyette) and Roy Cantell of Sheldon Springs. She was a 1951 graduate of BFA St Albans where she met here lifelong friend and future sister-in-law, Faith Britch, who introduced her to her one and only love, Roger William (Bill) Britch. They married on February 14, 1953, and together they raised a family of six children, James Britch, Cynthia Stone, George (Patricia) Britch, Howard Britch, Leah Britch (Louie St John) and Heidi Britch-Valenta (Kurt). She was deeply dedicated to her 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, several of whom held bedside vigil with her as she peacefully departed to meet her maker on January 3rd, 2026.

Mary was a true matriarch who showed her love by making her home a festive place for every holiday, hosting huge family gatherings and creating magic in her kitchen. She was an accomplished maker of doughnuts, prolific grower of food and flowers, and a gracious host for long days poolside, or warm gatherings around a holiday table where Faith (Britch) and Frank Thompson and their children were always a lively part of the party. Mary was a lifelong catholic and devoted member of the St. Louis Church where she attended mass weekly until she was unable. However, Mary's faith did not preclude her from having a deep affinity for Santa Claus, who was always an honored guest at her magical Christmas parties. Bringing joy to the children of her family was one of her greatest pleasures, and she will be remembered by them all for her kindness and generosity. She kept an extensive list of significant dates for her loved ones and never missed a chance to send a card which invariably ended with 'Love Always'.

Mary's gratitude and appreciation of simple pleasures made her a joy to be around, and a ride through the countryside always renewed her love for Vermont. She faced life's trials with unwavering strength and an impeccable work ethic. She raised her six children while working on the family's farm and finding success in her career. Mary was indomitable and overcame several obstacles to gain respected status within the US Customs and Border Protection, where she had achieved the title of Paralegal Specialist before retiring. She cherished the many friendships she made while working there.

Mary and Bill maintained strong friendships with special friends, Herve and Lise Airoldi, Marcel and Jienette Gagne, and Dianne and Arel Gagne, and met regularly with them to eat, drink and be merry, which typically involved a spirited game of cards. Mary and Bill also loved to 'cut a rug' to big band music at any opportunity. Mary deeply valued her close female friendships, and her calendar prioritized their monthly luncheon dates that she coordinated for decades.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bill, and Faith and Frank Thomspson, and her siblings, Catherine (Edmund) Woznack, Elaine (Robert) St. Pierre, Joyce 'Dodie' (Leo) Trombly, Janet (Aubrey) Vieta, and Leo 'Buddy' Cantell.

Friends & family are invited to Mary's life celebration to include visitation from 4-7:00 PM on Tuesday January 13th, 2026, at the Goss Life Celebration Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, VT. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 14th, 2026, at the St. Louis Catholic Church, 222 Lamkin Street, Highgate VT. Interment will be held this spring at the East Highgate Cemetery, Highgate VT.
