Mary Elizabeth (Liz) DeVay Broderick passed away suddenly in Chesterfield, NJ on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at 71 years of age.
Liz was born in Minneapolis, MN to Mary and James Edson DeVay in 1950. She relocated to Davis, California in 1957 with her family. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of San Francisco in 1972 and promptly joined the Navy where she proudly served as a lieutenant nurse until 1975 stationed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She met the love of her life, Kevin in 1972 and after several years of long-distance dating, the California girl officially moved to the East Coast. She married Kevin Broderick on March 20, 1977 on a sunny spring California day.
Liz was dedicated to her career in nursing and after primarily working with adults in an intensive care setting, she discovered her passion truly lie in the care of premature children. She perfected her craft at Beth Israel and Burlington Memorial Hospital in Newark and Mount Holly, NJ respectively in the neonatal intensive care and labor and delivery units. Her warm and loving personality was the perfect match for caring for new mothers and their babies. An avid learner who always wanted to provide the best care for her patients, she earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Seton Hall University in 1979.
After having her own two daughters and spending many years working nights and weekends, she decided to transition to a school setting and earned her School Nurse Certification from Trenton State College and started working as a school nurse at Kings Academy and New Hanover Elementary School in 1991. She then transitioned to the Medford Township School District, working at Taunton Forge School until her retirement in 2012.
Liz was a lover of nature and found peace and enjoyment in the outdoors. She particularly loved taking long walks to forage wild mushrooms to identify or prepare into some delicacy. She served as trustee of the New Jersey Mycological Society and was the lead organizer for their annual Fungus Fest events always sharing and spreading information about mushrooms and fungi and their impressive and vast uses.
To know Liz was to love her, she was involved in knitting and book clubs, spending time with her close friends regularly during the week and taking trips to enjoy time together and always cooking something unique and delicious when it was her turn to host them at her house. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with her family and in particular her grandchildren who were the great joys of her life. A fan favorite, "Grammy Grammy Grammy" was often heard as both a joke and a loving term of endearment. The love and care she always showed her family will never be forgotten.
Liz was predeceased by her parents James and Mary and is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Kevin; her daughters Erin (James) Henitz and Amelia (Michael) Joy; four grandchildren Julia, Ella, and Brian Henitz and Eddie Joy and her siblings Susan (Chuck) Shinneman, Sally (John) Andrews, Joe (Jill) DeVay, Paula (Don) Dolliver and Michael (Melissa) DeVay and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2021 from 4-7 PM and again on Friday October 29th from 9:30-10:30 AM at Huber-Moore Funeral Home, 517 Farnsworth Ave, Bordentown, NJ.
