Mary Buck Obituary

Mary Lou Buck

February 25, 1937 - June 30, 2024

Charlotte, North Carolina - Charlotte lost an icon recently, when Mary Lou passed on Sunday, June 30, 2024. She was a trailblazer in introducing yoga to countless Charlotteans. For over 40 years, she was often stopped around town by former students wanting to express how blessed they felt by her teaching. She was a dedicated member of Myers Park Baptist Church for 60 years, served as deacon, leader of Sunday School and on various committees. Mary Lou was an early environmentalist, pushing family and others to recycle and consider vegetarianism as early as the 1980s. She loved nature; besides being a Girl Scout and a frequent camper and hiker, she arranged for family land to be conserved for ecological value and was a volunteer leader with the local Sierra Club chapter.

Mary Lou was born in Statesville, NC in February 1937, daughter of William Zadok Smith and Margaret Naomi Pursley. She grew up in and around Gastonia, and after graduating from Gastonia High School she earned a degree in Physical Education at Women's College, now UNC-Greensboro. Mary Lou worked at various summer camps up north and after college got a job with the YWCA in Baltimore, MD, where she met her husband George at a church ice cream social. They returned to Charlotte in 1963, where she worked for the Girl Scout Council and taught swimming at the YWCA before shifting to yoga teaching and opening her studio, Yoga for Life.

Mary Lou had a very active life up until the end, eager to be involved and to support local initiatives. She loved being in the community and often hosted gatherings at her home, both to welcome new neighbors or to gather with yoga friends.

Mary Lou is survived by her children, Brian Buck of Santa Cruz, CA, Eric Buck of Washington, DC and Robin Buck of Charlotte and by her siblings, Suzanne Long and Bill Smith, and their families.

A memorial service will be held for Mary Lou at 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at Myers Park Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Heaton Hall. The service will be livestreamed at: https://myersparkbaptist.org/worship/livestream/ for those unable to attend in person.

Hello,
I am just reading about Mary Lou´s passing. I am greatly saddened - but also, as she was a believer, rejoicing for her. I took her yoga class at the YWCA on Park Road and later at her studio in Dilworth ( along with my mother and my daughter.)
We hiked Crowders Mtn together.
We visited the Mint Museum and Gantt Museum together on "Museum Day"!
So many memories over the years.

My sincere condolences .

I am so sorry that Mary Lou had to leave us. She lost her husband, George, a few years ago, and I am certain that was very difficult for her. I only learned of her death today. Please accept my sympathy for your loss.

I took several of Mary Lou Buck's classes at Central Piedmont Community College during the 1990's. Mary Lou Buck was a big inspiration for me in my life and with my yoga journey. I really loved how she dedicated love to everyone and everything on this planet. She transcended time and space and loved us all. She always tried to inspire people everywhere she went and every moment and time. I will miss her and consider myself fortunate for having known her. Jaibagwan!

I recall that my mother took some of Mary Lou's yoga classes and I believe I attended one as well. I remember hearing her name throughout my adolescence and thinking that she was 'cool'! On behalf of my parents, Wallace and Gini Osborne, I offer my condolences to the family. Blessings and peace to you all.

Mary Lou was a kind and very nice lady with great energy. She always smiled. I have fond memories of her, as I attended her classes for several years at Yoga for Life in Dilworth and Morehead Street. She was simply the BEST yoga instructor! I send my sincere condolences to her family during this difficult time.

Thinking of your family at this sad time. Mary Lou was my Dad´s first cousin and she was always working hard to get all of us together down on the "farm". What a lovely person.

Mary Lou and I started first grade together at South Gastonia Elementary School in Miss Ruby Falls´ class, close to 80 years ago. Remained friends through the years but distance and age entered the picture, keeping us from being close in our later years. She was a bridesmaid in our wedding. Condolences to her family.

Mary Lou Buck was a dear, kind person. I knew her slightly, and know had we spent time together over coffee or tea we would have had lots to share. I know she will be sorely missed by her loved ones, and many others.
