Mary Carney Obituary
Mary JoAnn Carney, 65, of Evansville, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2026 at her home. She was born June 23, 1960 in Alton, Illinois to John Neil Craig and the late Sina JoAnn (Whetzel) Craig.
Mary Jo served in the United States Navy as a cryptologist in Okinawa from 1978-1979. She had a strong Christian faith and studied the Bible on her own at home. She was always good with numbers which led her to work in accounts payable at D-Patrick, balancing and reconciling the credit accounts. Mary Jo was a wonderful mother, grandmother and sister. She enjoyed spending time with her family dearly. Mary Jo was known to be a great story teller and her grandchildren lovingly called her "Mot."
Mary Jo is survived by her daughters, Jenifer (T.J.) Mooney and Robin Samples; grandchildren, Jacob Mooney and Ryan Mooney; father, John Neil Craig; sister, Katy (Mark) Thomas; and brother, Robert (Pam) Craig.
In addition to her mother, Sina JoAnn Craig, Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Michael B. Carney.
Visitation will be from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2026 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. A Funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Tim Garrett officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Evansville Rescue Mission, 1400 Professional Boulevard, Evansville, IN 47714.

Jo Ann Phelps remembering your Mother, Grandmother and the Whetzel family in Alton, Il. We all attended Elm St.Presbyterian Church growing up. I remember them talking about Mary Jo. My thoughts are with all of you along with the memories.
