Mary A. Claassen, 90, of Emerson, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at a local care facility.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson, with visitation from 10-11 A.M. at the church.
Mary was born on October 25, 1935, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Joseph and Bernadine (Rich) Saunders. She attended school in Missouri and married Dean Claassen on March 18, 1954, in Yankton, South Dakota. Together they shared more than six decades of marriage filled with love, adventure, and a few stories, best left untold.
Mary could sew just about anything—doll clothes, wedding dresses, curtains for yet another move. Her hands were rarely still, and her ability to make something out of nothing was legendary. She and Dean lived in California and Texas before finally settling back in Nebraska, where they built a life that was equal parts hard work and hospitality.
For many years she worked alongside Dean rewinding electric motors, proving that partnership meant rolling up your sleeves. When she wasn’t working, she was cooking, crafting or socializing.
After Dean’s death, Mary faced widowhood with her signature mix of resilience and sharp humor. She made new friends, often holding court over coffee and treats while dishing out advice, teasing, and laughter in equal measure. Her quick wit and sharp tongue kept everyone on their toes—but her kindness always followed.
She is survived by her children: Judy Jacobs of Grand Rapids, MN, Rick Claassen (Jackie) of Dakota City, NE, Mary Koepke (Keith) of Sioux City, IA, and Tim Claassen (Patty) of Poplar Bluff, MO; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Georgiana Iglesias. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her laugh, her stubborn streak, and her famous “look” that said more than words ever could.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Bernadine; her husband, Dean; three granddaughters—Katie Koepke, Laura Koepke, and April Claassen—and great-granddaughter, Kassie.
