Mary Ellen Chaney, 89, of Huntsville, passed away Monday morning, March 11, 2024, at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
Mary Ellen was born in Westerville, Ohio, on July 9, 1934, to the late Lowell and Leah (Bosley) Chitwood. She married John Chaney, on March 6, 1959, in Minerva Park, Ohio, and he preceded her in death. Mary Ellen was also preceded in death by her brother Leroy “Tate” Chitwood.
Mary Ellen is survived by her three sons: Ralph (Debbie) Chaney, Scott (Pam) Nafzger, and Rusty Nafzger; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and her “furry friends” – her cat Joellen, and her dog Shadow.
Mary Ellen was the Union County Auditor for many years, then worked as treasurer of the Bellefontaine City Schools. She was a member of Indian Lake Community Church where she worked for several years as the secretary and treasurer. After retiring as treasurer at Indian Lake Community Church, Mary Ellen went to work for Nederveld Forensics.
In her spare time, Mary Ellen enjoyed cooking, making hook rugs, reading, doing embroidery, trips to Sam’s Club, and visiting the casinos. Mary Ellen was a member of Eastern Star – Palestine Lodge #158, Marysville. One of her proudest accomplishments was authoring her own cookbook “My Favorite Recipes Cookbook”, currently in its 5th printing. She was recognized for her many accomplishments as selected as 1992 Woman of the Year by the Indian Lake Business & Professional Women’s Club. Moss never grew under her car tires, she was known to travel extensively, covering all of Ohio and as far west as California.
Pastor Jim Ellington will officiate Mary Ellen's memorial service on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at 3pm, at Indian Lake Community Church, where visitation will be held two hours prior to the service (Casual Attire requested). In her own words, Mary Ellen doesn't want any boo-hooing or crying, but to remember her and celebrate the life she lived.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Indian Lake Community Church, 120 N. Orchard Island Road, Russells Point, OH 43348.
