Mary Freeman Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 17, 2025.
Mary Freeman, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on November 15, 2025, at her daughter's home in Oakland, Tennessee. Born on February 7, 1949, in Cloverport, TN, Mary lived her entire life in Hardeman County. She was 76 years old at the time of her passing, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Mary's early career included working as a paralegal, showcasing her intelligence and hardworking spirit. She later became a devoted homemaker, where she nurtured her family and created a warm and loving home. Additionally, Mary took great pride in being the family tax preparer, applying her meticulous nature to ensure her loved ones were well taken care of-both financially and emotionally. Her compassion extended to her work in the dietary department of the Western Mental Health Institute, reflecting her gentle and caring soul.
An active member of the Whiteville First Baptist Church, Mary was deeply involved in church activities and children's sports, emphasizing her devotion to youth and the community. Her presence brought a light-hearted joy to those around her; she had a simple yet profound sense of humor that brought smiles to everyone's faces. Mary had a profound love for basketball, eagerly cheering for her favorite teams, the University of Memphis and Fayette Academy. Her enthusiasm for life was contagious, and she shared it generously with her family and friends.
Mary is survived by her cherished daughter, Nicole Freeman Plakon and husband Robert of Oakland, and her son, James Daniel Freeman and wife Chelsea of Covington. She leaves behind a wonderful group of grandchildren: Allyssa, Zach, and Emily Plakon; Walker Leo, Wrenley Belle, Wrenna James, Wrandi Mae, and Wasilla Pearl Freeman, who will forever remember her with love. Mary is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Randall and Peggy Campbell, and her nephews, Shannon Gann Mercer and Brian Campbell, and a great nephew, Jake Campbell.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Randy Freeman, and her parents, Newbern Siler Daniel and Willie Lee Burns Daniel. Mary is also mourned by her late sisters, Lela Dean Gann and Dora Lee Daniel, who welcomed her with open arms into the eternal.
A visitation will be held at Whiteville First Baptist Church on November 21, 2025, from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service starting at 1:00 PM. Mary will be laid to rest in Melrose Cemetery.
Mary Freeman will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her spirit, humor, and devotion to her family and community will remain forever in our hearts. May she rest in peace. Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to Whiteville First Baptist Church.
