Shelby - Mary Hewitt Goodwin, a cherished member of the Shelby, North Carolina community, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on February 17, 1944, in Lenoir, North Carolina, Mary lived a life filled with love, dedication, and service to others.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and friend, Mary's life was a testament to the power of love and kindness. She graduated from Shelby High School in 1962 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from Appalachian State University in 1966. Her passion for learning and sharing knowledge led her to a remarkable forty-year career as a Spanish teacher at Crest Senior High School and Cleveland Community College, where she inspired countless students with her enthusiasm and dedication.
Mary was a long-time member of the Shelby Church of Christ, where her faith and spirit touched many lives. Her compassion extended beyond people; she had a deep love for animals, especially her dogs, whom she cared for with unwavering devotion.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Joe Anderson Hewitt, Jr.; sister, Nancy Jane Stallings; and stepdaughter, Kenan Page Goodwin. She is survived by her loving husband, Roy Anderson (Andy) Goodwin of the home; her son, Jonathan Victor Preston and his wife Helvia of Woodbridge, VA; her stepson, Jeffrey Goodwin and his wife Tracy of Roanoke, VA; and her four adored grandchildren, Isak, Genevieve, Whitney, and Caleb.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Mary's life at 3:00PM on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Terry Graves. Visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral service.
Mary Hewitt Goodwin's legacy of love, wisdom, and compassion will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. Her life was a beautiful example of selflessness, and her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.
