With deep love and sorrow, we announce the passing of Mary Lou Haitsuka, who departed this life on September 14, 2025, at the age of 84.

Born on May 9, 1941, in Lafayette, Louisiana, Mary Lou and her twin sister, Mary Ann, were the beloved daughters of Zelma "Alma" Comeaux Bailey. She lived a purposeful and generous life, marked by dedication to her work, her students, and her family.

Mary Lou spent many years in San Francisco, California, where worked for more than two decades in the banking industry. She later followed her true calling to Baltimore, Maryland, where she devoted over 20 years to teaching in the Baltimore City Schools, inspiring countless students with her patience, kindness, and unwavering commitment. She eventually made her home in Jacksonville, Florida.

Her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her partner, Branche L. Brown Jr.; her loving children, Damien and his partner Monica, Devin, and Giselle and her fiancée Dale; as well as her cherished step-children, Mark and his wife Charletta, and Nicole and Tony and his wife Sharon. She was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, who filled her life with laughter and love.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her mother, Alma Comeaux Bailey, and her twin sister, Mary Ann Shelton.

She will be remembered for her boundless love, wisdom, and grace-and for the warmth she brought to every room. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family, friends, and the many students whose lives she touched.

Her spirit of love, strength, and generosity will remain with us always.
