Mary Cecile Herr age 80, of Gillette passed away on January 2, 2026 at Campbell County Health. Mary Cecile Hullinger Herr, lovingly known to many as “Cecile,” was born on November 10, 1945, to Mearl and Gertie Hullinger in Presho, South Dakota. At birth, the doctor’s scale only went to 10 pounds—and Cecile weighed more than that. Declaring her “good enough,” the doctor officially recorded her weight as 10 pounds, a story that became a cherished family memory and a fitting start to her strong and spirited life. Cecile attended school in Vivian, South Dakota, where she completed grades 1 through 12 and graduated with salutatorian honors her senior year. While in school, she began her working career at the Vivian State Bank.
She later moved to Wyoming, where she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Herr. The two were married on April 7, 1984, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned decades. Cecile spent eight years working in the coal industry and truly loved truck driving. Together, Cecile and Bill shared many business ventures and adventures, including owning and operating the local Maytag store, traveling, and taking short trips to the mountains—moments they deeply treasured. Cecile was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed reading and found great joy in the kitchen, where her love was often shared through food. She will be fondly remembered for her cooking and her special recipes, especially her pumpkin pie and monkey bread, which became family favorites and lasting traditions.
Cecile is survived by her husband, Bill Herr; her sons, Bill (Donna) Herr of Gulliver, Michigan, and Tim (Heather) Herr of Gillette, Wyoming; her daughter, April Jaques of Mountain View, Wyoming; sister Cleo (Delvin) Shroyer, Ft. Pierre, South Dakota; along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mearl and Gertie Hullinger, and her sisters, Mary (Harold) Kaiser and Maxine (Allen) Feddersen.
