Mary Hynes Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Schmidt Funeral Home, P.C. - Wind Gap on Jul. 30, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Jane Hynes, a beloved sister,
devoted friend, and compassionate nurse, who passed away peacefully at the age of 75.
Born on December 8, 1949, in New Rochelle, New York, Mary Jane was the cherished
daughter of the late John-Anthony Hynes and Kathleen Ruddy-Hynes. She was raised
alongside her sister Ruth Ann in a home filled with love, strong values, and faith. Mary Jane
attended Blessed Sacrament and Saint Gabriel schools, where she first began to show the
kindness and quiet strength that would define her life.
Though she never married, Mary Jane devoted herself wholeheartedly to a 35-year career in
nursing-a calling more than a job. She began her training at Mount Sinai and continued her
studies and practice in Ireland, where she lived for a decade. Her time in Ireland brought
her great joy and a deepened sense of connection to her roots. She found a second home
among her extended family-cousins Geraldine and Edith, her beloved Aunt Tilly and Uncle
Patty, and many others who welcomed her with warmth and love.
Mary Jane treasured the countryside, horses, and rhythm of farm life in Ireland, all of which
enriched her soul. Among the many unforgettable moments of her life was meeting Eamon
de Valera, the former Prime Minister and President of Ireland, in the 1970s-an encounter
she would recall with pride and wonder for the rest of her life.
Upon returning to the United States, Mary Jane continued her nursing work at Holy Name
Hospital in Teaneck, New Jersey, where she was respected and deeply trusted by her
colleagues and patients alike. Her calm demeanor, clinical excellence, and unwavering
compassion made her a guiding light in times of vulnerability and need.
Mary Jane's faith in the Lord was the cornerstone of her life. Her devotion to her church
community was steadfast, and she drew strength, comfort, and purpose from her spiritual
beliefs throughout every stage of her journey.
She is survived by her loving sister, Ruth Ann, many cousins on both sides of the oceans
and by friends, former colleagues, and members of her church family who will forever
remember her kindness, humility, and grace.
Mary Jane Hynes lived a life of quiet service, deep faith, and enduring love. She gave
endlessly to others and asked for little in return. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all
who knew her.
May she rest in peace, reunited with those who went before her, wrapped in the eternal
embrace of God's love.
There will be no services at Mary Jane's request. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schmidt Funeral Home, PC of Wind Gap.
