Mary Ann Jackson
Sunrise: June 2, 1932
Sunset: August 23, 2025
Mary Ann Jackson, of Newark, NJ, was called home on August 23, 2025, at the age of 93. Born in New York and raised in Danville, Virginia, she made Newark, New Jersey her home for most of her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Turner Jackson Jr.; her son, William Kimball Jackson and her parents, James and Lucille Ford; and her brother, James Ford Jr.
Mary was known for her independent spirit and strong work ethic. After moving from Virginia to New York City, she began her career as an operator at Bell Atlantic, where she broke barriers as the third Black woman to hold that role. She later returned to Virginia, married, and worked as a secretary at Gibson School District. In 1966, Mary moved to New Jersey, where she rejoined Bell Atlantic (now Verizon). Through determination and excellence, she rose through the ranks to become a Manager, building a long and distinguished career.
In 1969, Mary became a proud homeowner in Newark, where she raised her children and lived for more than five decades until her passing. She was lovingly regarded as the matriarch of her street, a steady presence and source of strength in her neighborhood.
She enjoyed life's simple pleasures-traveling with her husband, sharing meals and laughter with loved ones, and cherishing time with her family. Mary carried herself with grace and determination throughout her life, leaving a lasting legacy of strength, perseverance, and love.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra D'Costa, and her husband, Anthony D'Costa; her grandson, Rabbi-El Dix, and his wife, Cindymarie Dix; her granddaughter, Janei Jackson, and her wife, Takiya Jackson; and her great-grandchildren, Blake Noah Jackson and Auden Nile Jackson. She is also survived by her niece, Patricia Walters; her nephews, James Ford III and Charles Derrick Ford; and a host of other beloved family members and friends.
Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Mary's memory to the United Way of Greater Newark or the United Way of Danville–Pittsylvania County, honoring the communities she called home.
