Mary (Janie) Shanks, a loving wife & partner, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, in her beloved home in Gonzales, Louisiana, at the age of 65. She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Smith; mother, Mary Smith; brothers, James (Jimmy) Smith, Ernest Green, Jack Tyner, and Ray Tyner.
Janie is survived by her husband and partner of 49 years, Willis Shanks; daughter, Christina (Will) Cheek; son, Christopher (TerriAnn) Shanks; three grandchildren: Christian Ocmand, Brandon Ocmand, and Caleb Shanks; and step-grand daughter, Samantha Cheek. Numerous nieces and nephews also mourn her loss. She had a close-knit family and was deeply loved by all.
Janie was a passionate plant enthusiast who spent countless hours tending to her beloved plants. She also loved and adored her cats, Fluff, Crybaby, Buddy, and BK.
Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Janie cherished her time living on the Alabama River. She had a deep connection to nature and found peace and tranquility in the river’s embrace.
Janie’s life was a testament to her love, kindness, and devotion to her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
