Mary Kathleen Garvey

It is with great sadness that the family acknowledges the death of Mary Kathleen Garvey, affectionately known as Kathy. She passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

Kathy, beloved wife of Elmer F. Garvey, was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the first of four children born to Robert D. and Margaret Sharpe.

Kathy grew up in Stratford, Connecticut, where she attended local schools and laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to helping others. She pursued her passion for nursing at the Bridgeport School of Nursing, earning her credentials as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Throughout her career, Kathy served in various healthcare settings across multiple states. Her nursing career was not only a personal achievement but also a continuation of a proud family tradition, as she was one of thirteen nurses spanning four generations.

Kathy and her family experienced several moves, living in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. Each relocation was marked by Kathy's ability to bring warmth and enthusiasm into the community they joined. In South Carolina, Kathy's vibrant spirit shone brightly during her time working at Dillard's Department Store in Spartanburg. Her enthusiasm for shopping became a hallmark among those who knew her, both at work and within her family. Kathy's love for shopping was so well known that Elmer, her devoted husband, jokingly remarked that he paid Dillard's to have the privilege of Kathy working there, as he only ever saw money leaving his accounts, never coming in!

Kathy's life was defined by service to her community. As a young woman, she volunteered with the Stratford Democratic Party during the Kennedy election campaigns and was active in the PTA at St. James Parochial School and in church activities with her children. Her commitment to youth was evident in her leadership of Girl and Boy Scout troops across Connecticut, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Kathy turned her home into a cookie warehouse as the Girl Scout council's cookie chairperson, even after her children left scouting. She also spent many summers as a camp counselor, creating lasting memories for scouts.

In Spartanburg, Kathy continued her legacy of service at Saint Paul's Catholic Church, where she took on many jobs. Kathy took immense pride in her role in preparing the church for services. She was dedicated to arranging flowers and linens, ensuring the sanctuary was beautifully decorated in accordance with the ecclesiastical calendar. Her attention to detail and commitment to creating a welcoming and reverent environment reflected her deep connection to her faith community.

Kathy selflessly dedicated her time to assisting those in need through her work with SAFE HOMES, now known as Project R.E.S.T. Serving on the Rape Crisis Line and as a Victim Advocate, she provided vital support and compassion to victims and survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Her dedication was recognized with top awards, such as Volunteer of the Year and the Ann Kersey Award. Beyond her advocacy, Kathy volunteered as a poll worker in local elections, reflecting her commitment to civic engagement.

Kathy's creativity shone through her many artistic endeavors. She was a talented and prolific knitter, and she found joy in cross-stitch, embroidery, and quilting. Her handmade creations became cherished keepsakes for family and friends, each piece reflecting her skill and the love she poured into her craft.

Kathy participated in social clubs like the Newcomers group in Spartanburg, South Carolina, expanding her circle of friends. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and abroad with loved ones, making lasting memories on her journeys.

Above all, Kathy cherished her family. Her devotion was evident in the love and care she gave to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Kathy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Elmer; her daughter, Kathleen Robin Murray; her son, Donald Paul Garvey; and her two brothers, Robert D. Sharpe Jr. and Laurence Paul Sharpe.

Kathy is survived by her sister, Patricia Sharpe Terceno of Stratford, CT; her daughter, Kimberly Hathaway of Young Harris, GA, and Kimberly's husband, Steve; son-in-law, Thomas Murray of Spartanburg; five grandchildren-Stephanie Hathaway Reagan, Jennifer Murray-Pinones, Courtney Murray-Pinnell, Brendan Murray, and Anna Kathleen Garvey. Kathy also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mary Kathleen Garvey's legacy is defined by her compassion, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family, friends, and community. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
